ESO unterzeichnet Vereinbarung zum Bau der Detektoren für MOONS

Der Weltklasse-Spektrograf MOONS wird die größten verfügbaren Nahinfrarot-Detektoren verwenden

Die ESO hat mit Teledyne Scientific & Imaging [1] eine Vereinbarung für den Bau der Detektoren des neuen MOONS-Instrumentes unterzeichnet, das am Flaggschiff-Obsevatorium der ESO, dem Very Large Telescope (VLT) auf dem Cerro Paranal in Chile montiert wird.

Die Detektoren heißen HAWAII-4RG und bilden die nächste Generation von Nahinfrarot-Detektoren für die Astronomie. Jeder Detektor wird 16,7 Millionen Pixel auf jeweils 15 Quadratmikrometern haben, so dass es sich um die größten Nahinfrarot-Detektoren handelt, die zurzeit erhältlich sind.

Die Technologie stützt sich auf eine lange und erfolgreiche Reihe von ähnlichen, aber kleineren Detektoren, die bei den ESO-Teleskopen bereits seit mehr als 10 Jahren im Einsatz sind. Von diesen neuen Detektoren der neuen Generation wird erwartet, dass sie die gleiche ausgezeichnete Leistung zeigen und dabei einen größeren aktiven Bereich auszunutzen.

Die Detektoren stellen die letzte Stufe in der Konstruktion des sehr komplexen Instrumentes namens MOONS dar,  dem Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph. MOONS, entworfen und von einem internationalen Konsortium im Auftrag der ESO gebaut [2], wird mit vier der neuen Detektoren ausgestattet und an einem der vier Hauptteleskope des VLT installiert.

MOONS wird das Licht (vom sichtbaren bis zum nahinfraroten Wellenlängenbereich) von vielen Objekten gleichzeitig sammeln und unter Verwendung von bis zu 1000 optischen Fasern von jedem dieser Objekte auf einem separaten Kanal ein einzelnes Spektrum erzeugen. MOONS ermöglicht Astronominnen und Astronomen, Spektren von Objekten über das gesamte Sichtfeld des VLT (Durchmesser 25 Bogenminuten) in einer einzigen Beobachtung zu sammeln.

Die Infrarot-Fähigkeiten von MOONS ermöglicht den Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern die Erforschung des fernen Universums und der stark verdeckten Regionen im Bulge unserer Milchstraße. Es wird Sterne in unserer Galaxie bis zu einer Entfernung von etwa 40.000 Lichtjahren beobachten und den Astronomen ermöglichen, eine dreidimensionale Karte unserer Galaxis zu erstellen [3]. Damit stellt es die notwendigen Werkzeuge zur Verfügung, um die Galaxienentstehung und -entwicklung über den größten Teil der Geschichte des Universums zu studieren.

[3] Dieses Kartierungsprojekt ist besonders schwierig, weil sich die Erde in der Mitte der Scheibe der Milchstraße befindet, so dass der Prozess ein wenig dem Versuch gleicht, einen Wald von innen heraus abzubilden.
