Projekt ERIS gestartet
Neue hochauflösende Kamera und Spektrograf für das Very Large Telescope der ESO

Die ESO hat auf dem Weg zur Entwicklung eines neuen leistungsfähigen Instruments, dem Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS) den ersten Schritt vorwärts gemacht. ERIS soll im Unit-Teleskop 4 des Very Large Telescope auf dem Cerro Paranal im nördlichen Chile installiert werden.
Nachdem eine entsprechende Ausschreibung nun beendet ist, wird die ESO das Projekt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Max Planck Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik in Garching unter Mitwirkung der ETH Zürich (Schweiz) und dem Arcetri-Observatorium des INAF (Florenz, Italien) durchführen. Die ESO hat das Startsignal für die zwei kollaborierenden Institute gegeben, wobei erste Beobachtungen für Ende 2017 geplant sind.
ERIS wird nach seiner Installation mindestens zehn Jahre lang betrieben werden und von einer adaptiven Optik (AOF – Adaptive Optics Facility) profitieren, die der Korrektur von Turbulenzen in der Erdatmosphäre dient. Dies zielt darauf ab, die bisher schärfsten Direktaufnahmen mit einem einzelnen 8-Meter-Teleskop zu erhalten [1]. ERIS wird die Rolle des äußerst erfolgreichen NACO-Instruments übernehmen, das dem Ende seiner Nutzungsdauer entgegen geht.
Die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten von ERIS decken viele Gebiete der Astronomie ab: Von der Untersuchung von Körpern in unserem Sonnensystem und der Beobachtung von Exoplaneten bis hin zu Aufnahmen von Galaxien im fernen Universum.
Ein Beispiel für eine wissenschaftliche Zielsetzung von ERIS ist die Beobachtung eines Sterns, der im Mai 2018 das supermassereiche Schwarze Loch im Zentrum der Milchstraße passieren und ihm dabei sehr nahe kommen wird. Der Stern mit dem Namen S2 umkreist das zentrale Schwarze Loch einmal alle sechzehn Jahre und Wissenschaftler haben bereits Daten für eine volle Umlaufdauer (siehe eso0846, eso1151). Durch die Messung des Einflusses, den das supermassive Schwarze Loch auf den Stern ausübt, wenn er ihm am nächsten kommt, können Astronomen einige der Gravitationseffekte testen, die Einsteins Allgemeine Relativitätstheorie hervorsagt.

[1] Eine sehr viel höhere Auflösung kann bei einigen Beobachtungsmodi durch die Kombination einiger Teleskope mit dem VLT-Interferometer erreicht werden. ERIS ist jedoch für in einem sehr viel breiteren Bereich für bildgebende Anwendungen einsetzbar, insbesondere für lichtschwächere Objekte.
