Neuer Film “ALMA – In Search of Our Cosmic Origins”

Um die Einweihung des Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Arrays (ALMA) [1] am 13. März 2013 herauszuheben, hat die ESO mit ihren internationalen Partnern ein neues Video mit dem Namen ALMA - In Search of Our Cosmic Origins (zu deutsch „ALMA – auf der Suche nach unseren kosmischen Ursprüngen“) veröffentlicht. Das 16-minütige Video präsentiert die Geschichte von ALMA von den frühen Tagen des Projekts vor einigen Jahrzehnten bis zu den neuesten Forschungsergebnissen.
Der Film ist mit eindrucksvollen Aufnahmen ALMAs illustriert, die vom Helikopter aus gewonnen wurden, und mit ausdrucksstarker Musik unterlegt, die von Toomas Erm von der ESO komponiert wurde. Das Video nimmt die Zuschauer mit auf eine Reise zur Heimat ALMAs auf dem Chajnantor-Plateau in die einzigartigen Bedingungen der chilenischen Atacama-Wüste auf einer Höhe von 5000 Metern.
Der Film erzählt die Geschichte des Projekts von seinen Anfängen, als Europa, Nordamerika und Ostasien ein gemeinsames Konzept für ein neues, großes Teleskop für Millimeter- und Submillimeterwellenlängen entwickelten, mit dem die kältesten und entferntesten Objekte im Universum beobachtet werden sollten. Dazu gehört auch die Suche nach dem perfekten Standort sowie die technischen, technologischen und logistischen Herausforderungen zum Bau einer so umfangreichen Infrastruktur unter den schwierigen Bedingungen an einem so abgelegenen Ort.
Das Video behandelt detailliert die komplexe und faszinierende Technologie, auf der ALMA basiert und zeigt, wie die 66 Antennenschüsseln auf der hochgelegenen Wüstenebene installiert wurden. Es gewährt Einblicke in die aufregenden wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen, die ALMA als leistungsstärkstes Observatorium seiner Art bringen wird. Die Erwartungen wurden bereits jetzt durch die ersten wissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse erfüllt, obwohl die Anlage bislang noch nicht vollständig in Betrieb war.

[1] Das Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) ist eine internationale astronomische Einrichtung, die gemeinsam von Europa, Nordamerika und Ostasien in Zusammenarbeit mit der Republik Chile getragen wird. Von europäischer Seite aus wird ALMA über die Europäische Südsternwarte (ESO) finanziert, in Nordamerika von der National Science Foundation (NSF) der USA in Zusammenarbeit mit dem kanadischen National Research Council (NRC) und dem taiwanesischen National Science Council (NSC), und in Ostasien von den japanischen National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) in Kooperation mit der Academia Sinica (AS) in Taiwan. Bei Entwicklung, Aufbau und Betrieb ist die ESO federführend für den europäischen Beitrag, das National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), das seinerseits von Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI) betrieben wird, für den nordamerikanischen Beitrag und das National Astronomical Observatory of Japan für den ostasiatischen Beitrag. Dem Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) obliegt die übergreifende Projektleitung für den Aufbau, die Inbetriebnahme und den Beobachtungsbetrieb von ALMA.
