Program : A zoom into the nuclei of IC1459 and NGC7582 PI : H. Dejonghe (herwig.dejonghe@UGent.be) CoIs : M. Baes, S. De Rijcke Program description : We propose to use SINFONI to take K-band spectra of the circumnuclear (3.2 arcsec)2 region of the nearby galaxies IC1459 and NGC7582. Both have prototypical Seyfert 2 nuclei, which can serve to guide the AO module, such that we can achieve a resolution of 0.1 arcsec, corresponding to a linear distance of the order of 5 pc. We will map the distribution and kinematics of the molecular and ionized hydrogen with the H2 S(1-0) and Br gamma lines over the entire field of view. This will allow us to constrain the size and orientation of the putative molecular torus. Moreover, since the nuclei have relatively strong stellar absorption features, we can study the kinematics of the nuclear stellar population with the CO(2-1) bandhead, well within the sphere of influence of the central black hole. The combination of gas and stellar kinematics will be used to determine the black hole mass. (2) The nucleus of NGC7582 can appear slightly extended, as there is a central red starbursting ring of about 1"x2". The actual nucleus is very bright though. ---------------------------------------------------------------- HD202589 : K4 III velocity template (mK ~ 7.0) RA 22:01:41.440 DEC -19:13:49.800 OB name : HD209170 M2III no AO 1" jitter box DIT = 1 sec NDIT = 3 on object, 1 on sky HD209170 : M2 III velocity template (mK ~ 6.0) RA 21:17:14.663 DEC -15:58:31.690 no AO 1" jitter box DIT = 1 sec NDIT = 3 on object, 1 on sky Remarks: With the 1" jitter box and NDIT=3, the light of a velocity template star, without AO, will cover most of the slitlets. This way, we can check whether the instrumental broadening profile varies from slitlet to slitlet. If so, we can correct for this and construct one velocity template spectrum for each slitlet. We would therefore ask to execute the OBs HD202589 and HD209170 only if the seeing is worse than 1" FWHM so as to disperse the starlight over as many slitlets as possible. ----------------------------------------------------------------
