Type = Science Verification P.I. = Harald Kuntschner General Description ------------------- This is a programme to image globular clusters in the lenticular galaxy NGC3115. We have deep optical imaging from VLT-FORS2 and Gemini-GMOS in hand and in this programme we plan to carry out deep imaging in the Ks band with HAWK-I to constrain ages, metallicities and spatial distributions of different star cluster populations. We wish to cover one central field in J,H,K. Observations should be conducted in the following sequence SOOSOOS ... (where O=object and S=sky field). The exposure times of S and O should be equal with DIT=30 seconds. Offsets of order >=17" should be applied to cover the cross-shaped gap and allow for bad pixel elimination. In each of the K, H filters we aim for a total of 30 min of on source integration time (+15min on sky + overheads yielding one OB of ~60 min per filter) in a seeing of 0.80" or better. For the J-filter we aim for 12 min of on source integration time (+6 min on sky + overheads yielding one OB of ~30 min ). The full programme would then be carried out in 3 OBs with a total execution time of 2.5 hours. Our target field is centred at (RA, Dec)_2000 = (10:05:14, -07:43:06), i.e. on the center of NGC3115. A good background field would be 13 arcmin to the North-West of the galaxy at about (RA, Dec)_2000 = (10:04:23,-07:38:27) Waiver requests --------------- N/A Critical Observing Condition Constraints ---------------------------------------- Seeing of 0.80" or better Time-Critical Aspects --------------------- N/A Special Execution Requirements ------------------------------ None Special Calibration Information ------------------------------- None ToO information --------------- N/A P.I. email ---------- hkuntsch@eso.org
