Video News Release 9: The Sharpest Vision — Interferometry with the VLT (eso0020a)

ESO Video News Reel no. 9 ("The Sharpest Vision - Interferometry with the VLT") is published on May 24, 2000. It is issued in conjunction with the Inauguration of the NOVA-ESO Expertise Centre (NEVEC) in Leiden (The Netherlands) on May 26, 2000. It contains sequences around the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), obtained at the Paranal Observatory, the ESO Headquarters in Garching and the two companies where the parts for this new facility are now being constructed. More details are available in ESO Press Release eso0020. VNR No. 9 begins with views of the Paranal platform with the telescope enclosures and the foundations for the VLT Interferometer. The astronomers work in the VLT Control Room. The VLT array at sunset. Computer animation of the VLTI (overview). The VLT 8.2-m Unit Telescope. Computer animation of the VLTI Delay Line principle. Scenes from FOKKER Space Headquaters (Leiden) and the first Delay Line carriage being tested there. The NEVEC Centre at the University of Leiden. Construction of the 1.8-m VLT Auxiliary Telescopes at AMOS (Liège, Belgium). Development of the PRIMA/MIDI instruments at ESO HQ in Garching (Germany). More scenes from Paranal. Some of the latest astronomical images from the VLT. Total duration of VNR No. 9 is about 7:30 min.

This Video News Release is targeted especially at broadcasters for further editing. In order to keep the audio tracks editable, different sound information has been recorded on two separate tracks at optimal volumes as is common standard in professional post production. This video is not meant for on screen viewing — on ESOcasts are better suited for that.
