Il Re di Spagna visita l'Osservatorio del Paranal dell'ESO

Mercoledì 6 giugno Sua Maestà Juan Carlos I, Re di Spagna, ha visitato l'Osservatorio del Paranal dell'ESO, dove ha incontrato i Presidenti di Cile, Colombia, Messico e Perù e altri Rappresentanti di alto livello presenti al Paranal per il Quarto Vertice dell'Alleanza del Pacifico.
Il Re di Spagna è arrivato mercoledì 6 giugno all'Osservatorio del Paranal dell'ESO, dove è stato ricevuto dal Presidente del Consiglio dell'ESO, Xavier Barcons, dal Direttore Generale dell'ESO, Tim de Zeeuw, dal Rappresentante dell'ESO in Cile, Massimo Tarenghi, e dal Direttore dell'Osservatorio, Andreas Kaufer.
"Siamo lieti di accogliere Sua Maestà al Paranal e di offrirgli la nostra ospitalità, qui nel mezzo del deserto cileno di Atacama", ha dichiarato Tim de Zeeuw.
In mezzo al deserto - uno dei più aridi al mondo, a un altitudine di 2600 m.slm. - il Paranal è uno dei migliori luoghi sulla Terra per condurre osservazioni scientifiche dell'Universo. Con i quattro UT (Unit Telescope) da 8,2 metri e i quattro AT (Auxiliary Telescope) da 1,8 metri che compongono il VLT (Very Large Telescope) dell'ESO e con i telescopi per survey VST e VISTA, il Paranal è l'osservatorio astronomico da terra più produttivo al mondo.
Il Re ha pranzato con i Presidenti di Cile, Colombia, Messico e Perù, insieme alle altre personalità del Costa Rica, Panama, Canada, Giappone e Australia, che avevano appena concluso il quarto vertice dell'Alleanza del Pacifico, che si è svolto al Paranal (si veda eso1223 per ulteriori informazioni sul vertice).
Il Ministro spagnolo degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione, José Manuel García-Margallo, che faceva parte della delegazione del Re, si è incontrato con Xavier Barcons per discutere brevemente il ruolo della Spagna nell'ESO.
Il Re è arrivato a Paranal nell'ultimo giorno della sua visita ufficiale in Sud America, in cui ha visitato Brasile e CIle, prima di ritornare in Spagna.
Negli ultimi mesi, molti membri di famiglie reali, tra cui il Principe delle Asturie, figlio di Juan Carlos I, e il Principe Filippo del Belgio, hanno visitato l'Osservatorio del Paranal e apprezzato i suoi cieli bui. È comunque la prima volta in cui un monarca regnante ha visitato l'osservatorio dopo l'inaugurazione.

Nel 2012 cade il 50o anniversario della fondazione dell'ESO (European Southern Observatory, o Osservatorio Australe Europeo). L'ESO è la principale organizzazione intergovernativa di Astronomia in Europa e l'osservatorio astronomico più produttivo al mondo. È sostenuto da 15 paesi: Austria, Belgio, Brasile, Danimarca, Finlandia, Francia, Germania, Gran Bretagna, Italia, Olanda, Portogallo, Repubblica Ceca, Spagna, Svezia, e Svizzera. L'ESO svolge un ambizioso programma che si concentra sulla progettazione, costruzione e gestione di potenti strumenti astronomici da terra che consentano agli astronomi di realizzare importanti scoperte scientifiche. L'ESO ha anche un ruolo di punta nel promuovere e organizzare la cooperazione nella ricerca astronomica. L'ESO gestisce tre siti osservativi unici al mondo in Cile: La Silla, Paranal e Chajnantor. Sul Paranal, l'ESO gestisce il Very Large Telescope, osservatorio astronomico d'avanguardia nella banda visibile e due telescopi per survey. VISTA, il più grande telescopio per survey al mondo, lavora nella banda infrarossa mentre il VST (VLT Survey Telescope) è il più grande telescopio progettato appositamente per produrre survey del cielo in luce visibile. L'ESO è il partner europeo di un telescopio astronomico di concetto rivoluzionario, ALMA, il più grande progetto astronomico esistente. L'ESO al momento sta progettando l'European Extremely Large Telescope o E-ELT (significa Telescopio Europeo Estremamente Grande), della classe dei 40 metri, che opera nell'ottico e infrarosso vicino e che diventerà "il più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo".
