Ein Loch im Himmel
Es sind nicht nur immer spektakuläre Himmelsobjekte, die ein gutes Motiv abgeben: Einige der überraschendsten Bilder portraitieren indes die Leere. Dieses neue Bild, gemacht mit dem 2,2-Meter-MPG/ESO-Teleskop, zeigt dunkle Tentakel, die von einem dunklen, leeren Kern in der Bildmitte ausgehen. Sie heben sich besonders gut gegen den Hintergrund von hellen, goldenen bis roten Sternen ab.
Diese Region ist nicht etwa ein Loch im Universum oder ein leerer Fleck am Himmel. Die dunklen Arme bestehen aus dichtem, undurchsichtigen Staub, der zwischen uns und dem dichten Sternenfeld dahinter liegt. Dieser verdunkelnde Staub ist Teil einer molekularen Dunkelwolke, einem kalten und dichten Gebiet, in dem sich große Mengen von Staub und molekularem Gas vermischen, die das sichtbare Licht der dahinter liegenden Sterne verschlucken.
Es ist noch ungeklärt, wie sich diese Wolken bilden, aber man nimmt an, dass sie ein sehr frühes Stadium der Sternenstehung darstellen – in der Zukunft könnte also die hier gezeigte Wolke sehr wohl in sich zusammenstürzen, und damit ein neues Sternsystem ins Leben rufen.
Während die Wolke auf diesem Bild ein ziemlich unbekanntes Mitglied in unserer näheren kosmischen Umgebung ist – sie trägt die Katalognummer LDN1774 – gibt es einige berühmte Exemplare von Molekülwolken, zum Beispiel Barnard 68, die etwa 500 Lichtjahre von uns entfernt ist. Barnard 68 ist schon intensiv von ESO-Teleskopen untersucht worden, sowohl im sichtbaren (eso9924a) wie im infraroten Licht (eso9934, eso0102a). Wie diese Bilder zeigen, kann man den kosmischen Staub im infraroten Licht durchdringen, während wir im sichtbaren Licht, wie auf dieser Aufnahme des VLT, nicht durch den Rauchschleier hindurchsehen können.
Das Bild ist mit dem Wide Field Imager entstanden, der am Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie in Heidelberg entwickelten Kamera am 2,2-Meter- MPG/ESO-Teleskop auf La Silla in Chile.
