Bundes-Bildungs- und Forschungsministerin Annette Schavan zu Besuch am Paranal

Annette Schavan, die deutsche Bundesministerin für Bildung und Forschung, hat am 29. und 30. September 2012 dem Paranal-Observatorium der ESO einen Besuch abgestattet.
Gastgeber der Ministerin und ihrer Delegation waren ESO-Generaldirektor Tim de Zeeuw, Andreas Kaufer, der Direktor des La Silla-Paranal-Observatoriums und Massimo Tarenghi, der offizielle Vertreter der ESO in Chile. Unter den Mitgliedern der Delegation, die Ministerin Schavan begleitete, waren ein Staatsminister, Mitglieder des deutschen Bundestages sowie hochrangige Vertreter deutscher Forschungsorganisationen und Universitäten.
Nach einer kurzen Einführung durch die ESO machte Ministerin Schavan einen Rundgang durch die Einrichtungen am Paranal-Basislager, wo sich auch die preisgekrönte Residencia befindet, ein einzigartiges Gebäude, das von dem deutschen Archtikturbüro Auer+Weber+Assoziierte entworfen wurde und den Astronomen, Ingenieuren, dem Betriebspersonal und Besuchern eine würdige Unterkunft am Observatorium bietet.
Im Anschluss bewunderte die Ministerin den spektakulären Sonnenuntergang von der Plattform des Very Large Telescopes (VLT) aus, dem fortschrittlichsten Observatorium der Welt, das im sichtbaren Licht arbeitet. Danach ließ sie sich Schavan auch die Einrichtungen auf dem Berggipfel zeigen. Der Tag endete mit kurzen Ansprachen von Schavan und Tim de Zeeuw bei einem kleinen Empfang vor dem Abendessen.
Am nächsten Tag reiste die Ministerin zum Cerro Armazones, den ESO als Standort für das European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) ausgewählt hat, das einmal das größte Teleskop der Welt für das sichtbare Licht sein wird. Das E-ELT ist das zentrale Element in den Plänen der ESO das Ziel das Design, den Bau und den Betrieb noch leistungsfähigerer Beobachtungseinrichtungen voranzutreiben.
Die ESO hat 15 Mitgliedsländer und ist die führende regierungsübergreifende Astronomie-Organisation weltweit. Deutschland ist als eines der fünf Grundungsmitglieder seit je her einer der stärksten Unterstützer der ESO-Aktivitäten und ist außerdem Sitz der des europäischen ESO-Hauptsitzes in Garching bei München.
