Tag der offenen Tür 2011 bei der ESO: Helfen Sie mit ein Modell vom Hauptspiegel des E-ELT in Originalgröße zu bauen

Der Hauptsitz der Europäischen Südsternwarte (European Southern Observatory, kurz ESO) in Garching bei München öffnet am Samstag dem 15. Oktober 2011 von 11:00 bis 18:00 seine Türen für jedermann. Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der Aktivitäten anlässlich des Tages der offenen Tür des Forschungscampus Garching, an dem sich auch viele andere Forschungsinstitute in der unmittelbaren Umgebung beteiligen.
Das Highlight des Tages – gutes Wetter vorausgesetzt – wird der der Aufbau eines Modells vom Spiegel des zukünftigen größten Teleskops der Welt auf dem Außengelände des ESO-Hauptsitzes in Originalgröße. Die Besucher können die 798 einzelnen Segmente des 39,3 Meter durchmessenden Hauptspiegels des European-Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) mithilfe von 1,40 Meter großen Sechsecken aus Pappe nachstellen. Das fertige Modell wird knapp 1000 Quadratmeter Fläche belegen.
Das E-ELT ist das bislang ehrgeizigste Projekt der ESO. Es wird einmal das größte Teleskop der Welt werden. Wenn es Anfang des nächsten Jahrzehnts den Betrieb aufnimmt, soll das E-ELT sich den größten wissenschaftlichen Herausforderungen stellen. Dazu gehört unter anderem der Nachweis eines erdähnlichen Planeten in der so genannten habitablen Zone eines Sterns, auf dem sich also Leben bilden könnte. Zusätzlich zu dieser einzigartigen Aktion beinhaltet das diesjährige Programm eine Vielzahl von Aktivitäten für alle Altersstufen:
- Vorführungen, Ausstellungen und Vorträge über die Entdeckungen, die mit ESO-Teleskopen gemacht wurden, die hochmoderne Technologie dahinter und den täglichen Betrieb der Observatorien
- Live-Videoschaltung zum Paranal-Observatorium, wo sich auf einem abgelegenen Berggipfel in der chilenischen Atacamawüste - 11.400 km von Garching entfernt - das Very Large Telescope der ESO befindet
- Lassen Sie sich mit einer Infrarotkamera fotografieren
- Planetariumshows
- Sonnenbeobachtung (nur bei klarem Himmel)
- Versenden Sie Postkarten vom Rand des Universums
- Frage- und Antwort-Runden mit ESO-Astronomen
- Spiel und Spaß für Eltern und Kinder wie beispielsweise Kinderschminken
