Spaniens kung besöker ESO:s Paranalobservatorium

Onsdagen den 6 juni besökte Spaniens kung, hans majestät Kung Juan Carlos I, ESO:s Paranalobservatorium. Där mötte han presidenterna i Chile, Colombia, Mexiko och Peru, samt andra högt uppsatta representanter som deltog i Stillahavsalliansens fjärde toppmöte.
Kungen av Spanien anlände onsdagen den 6 juni till ESO:s Paranalobservatorium. Där mottogs han av Xavier Barcons, ordförande i ESO:s råd, ESO:s generaldirektör Tim de Zeeuw, ESO:s representant i Chile, Massimo Tarenghi, samt observatoriets föreståndare Andreas Kaufer.
- Det är med stor glädje som vi välkomnar Hans majestät som vår gäst här på Paranal, mitt i den chilenska Atacamaöknen, sa Tim de Zeeuw.
På denna plats i en av världens torraste öknar, 2600 meter över havet, ligger är Paranal som är ett av världens bästa platser för vetenskapliga observationer av universum. Här finns de fyra 8,2-metersteleskopen och fyra hjälpteleskop på 1,8 meter som tillsammans utgör ESO:s jätteteleskop VLT (Very Large Telescope), samt kartläggningsteleskopen VLT och VISTA. Paranal är världens mest produktiva astronomiska observatorium.
Kungen åt lunch med Chile, Colombia, Mexiko och Perus presidenter samt andra högt uppsatta representanter från Costa Rica, Panama, Kanada, Japan och Australien som alla var på Paranal för Stillahavsalliansens fjärde toppmöte som nyss avslutats (se eso1223 för mer om toppmötet).
Spaniens utrikesminister, José Manuel García-Margallo, som var med i kungens delegation, träffade Xavier Barcons för ett kort möte om Spaniens roll i ESO.
Kungens besök till Paranal gick av stapeln under den sista dagen av hans officiella besök i Sydamerika innan hemresan till Spanien. Tidigare besökte han Brasilien och Chile.
Flera kungligheter har under de senaste månaderna besökt Paranalobservatoriet och fått uppleva dess mörka himlar, bland dem Prinsen av Asturias (eso1146), son till Juan Carlos I, och Prins Philippe av Belgien (eso1149). Däremot är det första gången sedan observatoriet invigdes (eso9921) som det har besökts av en regerande monark.

År 2012 är det 50 år sedan Europeiska sydobservatoriet (ESO) grundades. ESO är Europas främsta samarbetsorgan för astronomisk forskning och världens mest produktiva astronomiska observatorium. Det stöds av 15 länder: Belgien, Brasilien, Danmark, Finland, Frankrike, Italien, Nederländerna, Portugal, Schweiz, Spanien, Storbritannien, Sverige, Tjeckien, Tyskland och Österrike. ESO:s ambitiösa verksamhet rör design, konstruktion och drift av avancerade markbaserade forskningsanläggningar som gör det möjligt för astronomer att göra banbrytande vetenskapliga upptäckter. ESO spelar dessutom en ledande roll i att främja och organisera samarbeten inom astronomisk forskning. ESO driver tre unika observationsplatser i Chile: La Silla, Paranal och Chajnantor. Vid Paranal finns Very Large Telescope, världens mest avancerade observatorium för synligt ljus, och två kartläggningsteleskop: VISTA, som observerar infrarött ljus och är världens största kartläggningsteleskop, samt VST, det största teleskopet som konstruerats för att kartlägga himlavalvet i synligt ljus. ESO bidrar dessutom till ALMA, ett revolutionerande astronomiskt teleskop och världens hittills största astronomiska projekt. ESO planerar för närvarande bygget av ett europeiskt extremt stort teleskop i 40-metersklass för synligt och infrarött ljus, E-ELT. Det kommer att bli ”världens största öga mot himlen”.
