Zooma in mot Vintergatans centrum
Andra panoramabilden från GigaGalaxy Zoom

Nu släpps den andra av de tre bilderna i ESO:s projekt GigaGalaxy Zoom. Den är en ny, häftig, 340-megapixel stor vy mot Vintergatans mitt, sedd från ESO:s Paranal-observatorium med ett amatörteleskop.
Den nya bilden, som täcker ett 34 gånger 20 grader stort område på himlen, ger ett smakprov av universum som det upplevs av världens amatörastronomer. Den praktfulla bilden har tillkommit tack vare den optimala observationsplatsen och skickligheten hos fotografen, Stéphane Guisard, som är både världskänd astrofotograf och ingenjör hos ESO. Det är inte bara en av världens klaraste natthimlar som gör bilden, utan även att Guisard använt sin expertis som optisk ingenjör och specialist på teleskop. Guisard är chef för optisk teknik vid Paranalobservatoriet och ansvarar för att jätteteleskopen VLT når den bästa möjliga prestanda.
För att skapa sin storslagna mosaikbild på galaxens mitt lade Guisard ihop cirka 1200 fotografier med en total exponeringstid på mer än 200 timmar, tagna över 29 nätter. Det hela gjorde han på natten under sin lediga tid; på dagen jobbade han på Paranalobservatoriet.
Bilden täcker natthimlen från Skyttens stjärnbild till Skorpionen. Till höger på bilden ser man det färgglada området runt stjärnorna Rho i Ormbäraren och den röda superjätten Antares. Mörka nebulosor, Ormnebulosan till exempel, syns också tydligt. Vintergatans stofttunga band löper snett ned över bilden, med Lagunnebulosan och Trifidnebulosan som rödaktiga utropstecken. Det mörka bandet döljer också galaxens mittpunkt där ett supertungt svart hål lurar bakom stoftslöjorna.
- Området som jag har avbildat här är en otroligt rik del av himlen, och det som jag tycker är allra vackrast, säger Guisard.
Stjärnlandskapet är den andra av tre bilder som tillsammans utgör projektet GigaGalaxy Zoom, lanserat av ESO som en del av Internationella astronomiåret 2009. Projektet visar universum som det ser ut från de bästa platserna i världen. På Gigagalaxy Zooms hemsida kan man göra en hisnande djupdykning in i Vintergatan. Dessutom kan man lära sig mer om spännande objekt i bilden, som färgsprakande nebulosor och exploderande stjärnor, genom att helt enkelt klicka på dem. Projektet bildar en länk mellan natthimlen, som är tillgänglig för alla, med det djupa, dolda kosmos som astronomer forskar om. Bilderna är i sig en hyllning till natthimlens prakt sedd från ESO:s observatorier i Chile, de mest produktiva i världen.
GigaGalaxy Zooms tredje bild kommer att avslöjas nästa vecka, den 28 september 2009.
