En koi-smisk fisk

Denna veckas bild visar den färgglada Gum 3-nebulosan fotograferad med VLT Survey Telescope (VST) på ESO:s Paranalobservatorium i den chilenska Atacamaöknen. Om man tittar noggrant kan man ana att en del av Gum 3-nebulosan liknar en koifisk i denna VST-bild. Teleskopet är utrustat med instrumentet OmegaCAM, en enorm 268-megapixelkamera, som kan övervaka stora områden av den södra himlen i synligt ljus och ta fantastiska bilder som denna.

Gum 3 är ett interstellärt moln av gas och stoft på omkring 3 600 ljusårs avstånd, beläget på gränsen mellan stjärnbilderna Enhörningen och Stora hunden. Nebulosan är uppkallad efter Colin Stanley Gum, en australisk astronom som katalogiserade 84 nebulosor på den södra stjärnhimlen.

När intensiv ultraviolett strålning från närliggande unga stjärnor kolliderar med väteatomer i molnet avges synligt ljus i mycket specifika färger, som vi ser som nyanser av rött och rosa i bilden. Samtidigt reflekterar små stoftpartiklar i nebulosan stjärnljusets blå färger särskilt bra, ungefär på samma sätt som får himlen att se blå ut här på jorden. Detta färgspel gör att nebulosor som denna är spektakulära sevärdheter på himlen. 

Den här bilden visar inte bara färger, utan också bristen på sådana. Titta noga på området precis till höger om den ljusaste delen av molnet - till höger om den rosa "koi-smiska fisken". Är det något som ser underligt ut här? I detta diffusa mörka område finns inte färre stjärnor i verkligheten; det rör sig snarare om ett tätt och mörkt stoftmoln som blockerar en del av det synliga ljuset från mer avlägsna stjärnor.
