En rosa glöd i mörkret
Två olika typer av nebulosor kan ses i veckans bild. Båda har en distinkt färg i det synliga våglängdsområdet. Här har de fångats med vidvinkelkameran OmegaCAM på ELT Survey Telescope (VST) vid ESO:s Paranalobservatorium i den chilenska öknen.
Den ljusa stora emissionsnebulosan i bildens mitt, IC 1284, är en stjärnbildningsregion som huvudsakligen består av vätgas. Dess rosa färg uppstår när vätets elektroner exciteras av den starka strålningen från unga stjärnor – när elektronerna faller tillbaka och förlorar sin energi omvandlas denna till en alldeles specifik ljusvåglängd eller färg. Ett av filtren i OmegaCAM släpper igenom just denna våglängd vilket gör den röda nebulosan väldigt tydlig.
Ett annat filter släpper igenom ljuset från de blåskimrande reflektionsnebulosorna NGC 6589 och NGC 6590 i bildens nedre högra hörn. Stoft i reflektionsnebulosor sprider huvudsakligen ljus med korta våglängder från närbelägna stjärnor, vilket skapar deras karaktäristiska blåa färg. Det är faktiskt av exakt samma anledning som himlen är blå!
Bilden täcker ett område på himlen som är ungefär lika stort som fullmånen. Den togs inom ramen för ett kartläggningsprojekt inom ESO med namnet Photometric H alpha Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+). Inom projektet observeras stjärnor och nebulosor i synligt ljus för att bidra till förståelsen av hur de bildas, utvecklas och dör.
