En smäll från förr
Ser du den lilla röda fläcken? Det är en extremt avlägsen explosion i det tidiga universum som fångades med instrumentet X-Shooter på ESO:s Very Large Telescope (VLT). Ljuset kommer från en gammablixt (Gamma Ray Burst, GRB), en av de ljusstarkaste och mest svårförstådda fenomenen i universum.
I september 2021 upptäckte NASA:s rymdteleskop Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory en stark källa till gammastrålning från denna punkt på himlen. När det initiala blixten från GRB:n har dött ut är efterglöden ljusare i längre våglängder som synligt och infrarött ljus. Men de blir svaga fort vilket betyder att astronomerna måste reagera väldigt snabbt.
Ett forskarlag under ledning av Andrea Rossi vid INAF i Bologna observerade efterglöden till denna GRB med ett antal teleskop världen över, inklusive ett antal ESO-instrument på VLT och de två robotteleskopen REM och GROND på ESO:s La Sillaobservatorium.
Förutom bilder som togs med X-Shooter användes instrumentet även för att ta spektra. Med denna information var det möjligt att avgöra att blixten uppstod i en extremt avlägsen galax när universum var endast 6% av sin nuvarande ålder, vilket gör denna GRB till en av de mest avlägsna man har studerat.
Ursprunget till gammablixtar är ännu något av ett mysterium. Enligt Rossi och hans forskarlag frigjorde denna GRB så mycket energi att den sannolikt orsakades av material som föll in mot ett svart hål eller (mindre troligt) en magnetar – en neutronstjärna med ett mycket starkt magnetfält. Med ESO:s kommande Extremely Large Telescope kommer egenskaperna hos gammablixtar och deras källor att studeras i större detalj, med förhoppningen att kunna avgöra deras ursprung.
