Ny teknik för en skarpare framtid

Sedan 1989 har detta teleskop observerat och avbildat natthimlen i utsökt detaljrikedom. Några av dess mer minnesvärda bedrifter inkluderar observationen av två sammansmältande neutronstjärnor, en mer detaljerad förståelse av asteroidernas struktur, analyser av hundratals planetariska nebulosor, och studier av planeter i avlägsna stjärnsystem.
Teleskop med större speglar kan fånga in mer ljus, men en större spegel är svårare att kontrollera så att den behåller sin perfekta form. Astronomer har funnit att teleskop med speglar större än 5 meter prodocerar dramatiskt sämre bilder när gravitationen förvränger deras spegelytor. NTT har en spegel med 3,5 meters diameter och byggdes för att testa ny teknik, bland annat aktiv optik, för att kunna konstruera ännu större teleskop.
Idén bakom aktiv optik kom från ESO-ingenjören Raymond Wilson och innebär att en tunn och deformerbar primärspegel kontrolleras med spegelstöd som korrigerar för gravitationens deformerande krafter. De slutsatser man drog av teleskopets konstruktion blev avgörande, och tekniken implementerades snart i de två 10 meter stora Keckteleskopen på Hawaii.
