ESO signerar avtal om ANDES-instrumentet för ELT

I dag har ESO signerat ett avtal med ett internationellt konsortium av institutioner som designar och konstruerar ANDES, ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph, ett instrument som kommer att installeras på ESO:s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). ANDES kommer att användas för att söka efter tecken på liv på exoplaneter och söka efter de allra första stjärnorna. Det kommer också att användas för att utröna potentiella variationer hos fysikens grundläggande konstanter och mäta accelerationen hos universums expansion.

Samarbetsavtalet undertecknades av ESO:s generaldirektör Xavier Barcons och Roberto Ragazzoni, ordförande för Italiens nationella institut för astrofysik (INAF), den institution som leder ANDES-konsortiet. Vid undertecknandet deltog även Sergio Maffettone, Italiens generalkonsul i München, och INAF:s Alessandro Marconi, ANDES forskningsledare, liksom andra representanter från ESO, INAF, ANDES-konsortiet och Italiens konsulat i München. Undertecknandet ägde rum vid ESO:s högkvarter i Garching, Tyskland.

ANDES, tidigare känd som HIRES, är en kraftfull spektrograf: ett instrument som delar upp ljuset i dess komponentvåglängder och gör det möjligt att bestämma viktiga egenskaper hos astronomiska objekt, som deras kemiska sammansättning. Instrumentets våglängdsprecision i ljusets synliga och nära infraröda områden blir högre än för någon annan spektrograf och kommer, när det arbetar tillsammans med det kraftfulla spegelsystemet i ELT, att möjliggöra forskning inom flera av astronomins områden.

"ANDES är ett instrument med en enorm potential att göra banbrytande vetenskapliga upptäckter som på en grundläggande nivå kan påverka vår uppfattning om universum långt bortom forskarsamfundet", säger Marconi. Céline Péroux, projektforskare i den ESO-grupp som följer utvecklingen av ANDES, tillägger att forskningsområdena sträcker sig "från att potentiellt upptäcka livssignaturer hos andra världar och identifiera den allra första generationen av stjärnor, till att studera möjliga varationer hos fysikens grundläggande konstanter.”

ANDES kommer att genomföra detaljerade undersökningar av atmosfärerna hos jordliknande exoplaneter, vilket gör det möjligt för astronomer att söka efter livstecken. Den kommer också att kunna analysera kemiska grundämnen i avlägsna objekt i det tidiga universum, och blir därmed sannolikt det första instrumentet som kan upptäcka signaturer av Population III-stjärnor, de första stjärnorna som föddes i universum. Dessutom kommer astronomer att kunna använda ANDES-data för att undersöka om fysikens grundläggande konstanter varierar i tid och rum. Dess omfattande data kommer också att användas för att direkt mäta accelerationen hos universums expansion, ett av de mest trängande kosmologiska mysterierna.

ESO:s ELT konstrueras för närvarande i Atacamaöknen i norra Chile. När observationerna inleds senare detta decennium kommer ELT att vara “världens största öga” mot himlen, och markerar därmed en ny era för markbaserad astronomi.
