LA GALAXIA "PATAS ARRIBA"

El aspecto cautivante de este retrato de la galaxia starburst [1] NGC 1313 contradice su desorden interior. Las densas acumulaciones de estrellas brillantes y de gas en sus brazos señalan un auténtico "baby-boom" estelar en curso. Sondeando más profundamente en el corazón de la galaxia, los astrónomos han revelado muchos enigmas que siguen desafiando nuestro entendimiento.

Esta imagen de la parte central de NGC 1313 tomada por FORS es de una belleza natural sorprendente. Este objeto presenta ciertos parecidos con algunos de nuestros más famosos vecinos: las Nubes de Magallanes. Sin embargo, NGC 1313 es una galaxia espiral barrada, con brazos muy cortos que apenas asoman desde los extremos de la barra (la estructura central más brillante).

La galaxia se encuentra a una distancia de tan sólo 15 millones de años luz, un pequeño salto, a escala cósmica. Los brazos espirales albergan una intensa actividad de formación estelar, con numerosos cúmulos jóvenes de estrellas calientes, formándose constantemente y a un ritmo asombroso a partir de densas nubes de gas y polvo. Sus estallidos de luz en el gas circundante crean un hermoso juego de nebulosidades luminosas y oscuras.

Pero NGC1313 no es solamente una linda foto. Escarbando un poco más allá de la elegante superficie, nos topamos con una de las mayores controversias a las que se enfrentan los astrónomos en el campo de las ciencias estelares y galácticas. Las galaxias starburst son objetos fascinantes, a estudiar con lujo de detalles. En las galaxias vecinas, alrededor de un cuarta parte de las estrellas masivas son creadas en éstas poderosas "fábricas" y a un ritmo vertiginoso, unas 100 veces más elevado que el de nuestra propia Vía Láctea.

En la gran mayoría de las galaxias starburst [1], el detonante de la formación estelar es la interacción de galaxias, pudiendo estas últimas colisionar o sencillamente aproximarse demasiado. La atracción gravitatoria mutua perturba fuertemente el gas y el polvo, provocando un "estallido" de formación estelar.

La apariencia de NGC 1313 sugiere que ha pasado por tiempos violentos: sus brazos en espiral tienen una forma irregular y además están rodeados por nubes de gas. Más aún, observaciones realizadas con el telescopio de 3.6 metros desde el Observatorio La Silla han revelado que su verdadero "centro", en torno al cual gira, no coincide con la barra central.

Lo que es más extraño aún es que NGC 1313 parece ser un sistema aislado. No es parte de un grupo, no tiene vecinos y tampoco está claro que en el pasado haya podido "engullir" a otra galaxia más pequeña. ¿Qué puede entonces ser responsable de esta asimetría y de una natalidad estelar tan elevada?

La explicación basada en la presencia de una barra central tampoco funciona en el caso de NGC1313, puesto que gran parte de su formación estelar tiene lugar en regiones ricas de gas distribuidas a lo largo de los brazos.

Los astrónomos simplemente no están seguros del mecanismo que comprime el gas hasta producir semejante nacimiento masivo de estrellas.

Investigando más, el interior de NGC 1313 parece esconder aún más misterios. En el medio de la violencia cósmica de una región de formación estelar activa, existen dos objetos que emiten una gran cantidad de rayos X de altas energías. Se trata de dos ULX, la sigla en inglés por "Fuente de Rayos X Ultra-Luminosa".

Los astrónomos creen que se trata de 2 agujeros negros con masas de unos pocos centenares de masas solares cada uno y que constituirían un sistema binario. Cómo objetos de este tipo puedan formarse a partir de estrellas normales no puede ser explicado por los modelos actuales.

En resumen, NGC 1313 representa un objetivo intrigante para la astronomía.
