Nubes oscuras y un cielo nocturno estrellado
El centro de la Vía Láctea emerge entre dos telescopios en el Observatorio La Silla de ESO, en el desierto de Atacama (Chile), con salpicaduras de luz incrustadas en nubes oscuras.
Entre los telescopios se pueden ver dos brillantes nebulosas: la nebulosa Trífida (izquierda) y la nebulosa de la Laguna (derecha). Se pueden encontrar en la constelación de Sagitario, y su color rojo se debe a la presencia, en estas nubes, de átomos de hidrógeno ionizados por estrellas jóvenes. La nebulosa Trífida también muestra un tinte azulado causado por el polvo que refleja la luz de algunas de estas estrellas. Pero la mayor parte del polvo que vemos en esta imagen aparece como nubes oscuras: cuando no están iluminadas por estrellas cercanas, las nubes interestelares bloquean la luz que hay detrás de ellas, apareciendo de este modo negras sobre el fondo estrellado.
El telescopio de la izquierda es el New Technology Telescope (NTT) de ESO. Fue pionero en la aplicación de óptica activa, una tecnología que mantiene la forma del espejo del telescopio durante las observaciones a pesar de las deformaciones debidas al peso o la temperatura. A la derecha vemos el Telescopio de 3,6 metros de ESO, hogar de los instrumentos detectores de exoplanetas HARPS y NIRPS, y un telescopio muy importante para el astrónomo que tomó esta foto, José Rodrigues. "Es muy especial porque crecí con un póster del 3,6 m en mi habitación, soñando con usarlo para encontrar exoplanetas" –– un sueño que ahora ha hecho realidad como investigador de exoplanetas.
