Un agujero negro captado mientras lanzaba una ráfaga
Al acecho, a unos 70 millones de años luz de distancia de la Tierra, en la constelación de Grus, se encuentra la galaxia NGC 7582, una galaxia espiral que alberga un agujero negro supermasivo en su núcleo. Estas imágenes fueron captadas como parte de un estudio utilizando el instrumento MUSE, instalado en el Very Large Telescope (VLT) de ESO, para descubrir el efecto de un agujero negro activo en la formación de estrellas en la galaxia.
La galaxia contiene un núcleo activo (AGN por sus siglas en inglés), un motor central extremadamente energético impulsado por el agujero negro supermasivo que devora el material más cercano. En este proceso, la materia se calienta, lanzando enormes cantidades de energía y poderosos vientos hacia el área circundante. Pero, ¿qué efecto tiene esto en la galaxia en general?
Para averiguarlo, un reciente estudio, dirigido por Stéphanie Juneau, del NOIRLab del NSF (Estados Unidos), analizó la distribución de diferentes elementos ionizados en la galaxia. La imagen de la derecha muestra oxígeno, nitrógeno e hidrógeno en azul, verde y rojo respectivamente. Las áreas rojas brillantes son regiones de alta actividad de formación estelar, mientras que las regiones azules dominantes muestran el material en forma de cono que fluye hacia el exterior del núcleo activo. La imagen de la izquierda, que cubre la misma área, muestra una vista más clásica de esta galaxia, con carriles de polvo que oscurecen la luz estelar azul y naranja.
MUSE también permitió al equipo mapear el movimiento de las estrellas y el gas. Descubrieron que NGC 7582 puede tener una estructura que rodea a su agujero negro supermasivo central y protege al resto de la galaxia de la potente emisión de energía que proviene del núcleo activo, desviándola y alejándola de ella en forma de un viento extremadamente poderoso.
