Nueva tecnología para un futuro más nítido
Encaramado entre el arco en cascada de la Vía Láctea y la oscura ladera de la montaña del Observatorio La Silla, se encuentra el NTT (New Technology Telescope, Telescopio de Nueva Tecnología).
Desde 1989, este telescopio de ESO ha observado y tomado imágenes de nuestro cielo nocturno con exquisito detalle. Algunos de sus logros más recientes incluyen: la observación de la fusión de dos estrellas de neutrones; una visión más detallada de la estructura de los asteroides; el análisis de cientos de nebulosas planetarias; e incluso la investigación deplanetas en sistemas solares lejanos.
Los telescopios con espejos primarios más grandes son capaces de captar más luz. Sin embargo, cuanto mayor es el espejo, más difícil es mantener una forma perfecta. Los astrónomos descubrieron que, con espejos primarios de más de cinco metros de diámetro, la calidad de la imagen disminuía enormemente a medida que la gravedad los deformaba (NTT tiene 3,5 metros de diámetro y estaba destinado a ser un proyecto pionero para permitir la construcción de telescopios con espejos más grandes). La óptica activa, una idea que surgió del ingeniero de ESO, Raymond Wilson, implica que un espejo primario, delgado y deformable, puede ser controlado por un sistema de soporte primario que aplica la fuerza necesaria para corregir estas deformaciones inducidas por la gravedad.
Las mejoras en la astronomía terrestre como resultado de este nuevo diseño fueron enormes. La óptica activa se convirtió en la característica principal del NTT, que desde entonces ha visto los fenómenos del cielo con exquisito detalle. La óptica activa del telescopio pronto se implementó en los dos telescopios segmentados de 10 metros del Observatorio Keck, en Hawái. El diseño de este telescopio fue revolucionario. Actualmente se siguen haciendo mejoras, implementando tecnología similar en algunos de los telescopios más grandes del mundo.
