Súper Luna sobre el Very Large Telescope de ESO
La noche del 19 de Marzo fue protagonista de una inusual coincidencia de fenómenos astronómicos: la Luna llena se produjo casi al mismo tiempo en que la Luna alcanzaba su punto más cercano a la Tierra en su órbita elíptica (conocido como perigeo). La combinación de la Luna llena y su relativa cercanía a la Tierra permitió que nuestro satélite natural luciera significativamente más grande y brillante que lo habitual. Esta fotografía panorámica, tomada por el Foto-Embajador de ESO Gerd Hüdepohl, muestra de llamada “súper Luna” desde Cerro Paranal, hogar del Very Large Telescope (VLT) de ESO, en la Región de Atacama en Chile.
En el Este (derecha), la Luna sale sobre las montañas mientras el Sol se va hundiendo lentamente en el Oeste (izquierda), bajo las nubes que cubren el Océano Pacífico. Los últimos rayos del Sol iluminan las cúpulas de los cuatro telescopios gigantes del VLT, la cúpula más pequeña del Telescopio de Rastreo del VLT, los cuatro Telescopios Auxiliares móviles del VLT, y las siluetas de algunos funcionarios de Paranal que salieron a la plataforma para presenciar la puesta de Sol y la salida de la Luna.
La coincidencia de la Luna llena con el perigeo fue un deleite para los observadores. La Luna llegó a estar 30 000 kilómetros más cerca de nosotros que su distancia promedio. Esto permitió ver la Luna se un 14% más grande y un 30% más luminosa que cuando alcanza su mayor distancia. Contrario a lo que algunos reportes han afirmado, estas “súper Lunas” no tienen ningún efecto significativo en terremotos o erupciones volcánicas, y no aumentan el riesgo de desastres naturales.
Si bien este acercamiento a la Tierra, el mayor en casi dos décadas, ofreció a los observadores una gran oportunidad fotográfica, La Luna sigue estando a más de 357 000 kilómetros de distancia, incluso en la cima del Cerro Paranal que se encuentra a 2 600 metros de altura. Afortunadamente contamos con modernos y poderosos telescopios astronómicos como el VLT, capaces de poner a nuestro alcance hasta los objetos más distantes.
