Estructura fina de NGC 6302
Esta espléndida imagen en color de la famosa Nebulosa Planetaria austral, NGC 6302 o la Nebulosa Insecto (a veces con el apodo de Nebulosa Mariposa), se obtuvo combinando imágenes de color azul, amarillo y rojo capturadas el 22 de mayo de 1998, con exposiciones de 10 minutos y una calidad de imagen superior a 0,6 arco-segundos.
Hacia el fin de su vida, algunas estrellas masivas se expanden llegando a dimensiones enormes. Vierten la mayoría del hidrógeno hacia sus capas exteriores como un fuerte “viento estelar”, antes de contraerse hacia una etapa final compacta como “enanas blancas”.
Antes de este proceso de eyección, la estrella permanece miles de veces más brillante y también más caliente que el Sol durante unos pocos miles de años. Su fuerte radiación ultravioleta tiene el efecto de ionizar el gas eyectado previamente, el cual luego brilla antes de dispersarse hacia el espacio interestelar. Las nebulosas resultantes (comúnmente denominadas Nebulosas Planetarias, dado su parecido a un planeta vistas desde un pequeño telescopio) frecuentemente exhiben morfologías muy complejas.
La Nebulosa Mariposa pertenece a una clase de nebulosas bipolares, como ilustra claramente esta fotografía. Un opaco disco de polvo – visto de perfil en esta imagen - oculta de nuestro panorama la estrella central. Sin embargo, su fuerte radiación escapa de forma perpendicular al disco e ilumina el material depositado ahí por el viento estelar.
El origen del disco oscuro podría deberse a que la estrella central es miembro de un sistema estelar doble. Se ha demostrado que así es el caso en algunas otras nebulosas bipolares en las cuales, al contrario de la Nebulosa Mariposa, existe una visión directa hacia la estrella.
