Se firma convenio para la construcción de 4MOST

El espectrógrafo de vanguardia potenciará las capacidades de VISTA

ESO ha firmado un convenio con un consorcio liderado por el instituto Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP) [1] para la construcción de 4MOST, un excepcional instrumento espectroscópico de vanguardia, que será instalado en el telescopio Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) en el Observatorio Paranal de ESO, situado en el norte de Chile.

El convenio fue suscrito en Postdam por el Director General de ESO, Tim de Zeeuw, y por Matthias Steinmetz y Matthias Winker en representación de AIP. La ceremonia de firma contó con la presencia de S.E. Johanna Wanka, Ministra Federal de Educación e Investigación de Alemania y Martina Münch, Ministra de Estado de Ciencias, Investigación y Cultura del Estado Federado de Brandenburgo.

4MOST, el Telescopio Espectroscópico Multi-Objeto de 4 metros, será instalado en el telescopio VISTA, en la posición ocupada por la cámara infrarroja de VISTA (VISTA Infrared Camera), el actual instrumento caballito de batalla en VISTA, donde proporcionará capacidades nuevas y únicas al telescopio. Se espera que el instrumento inicie sus operaciones en el año 2022, permitiendo dilucidar algunas de las interrogantes astronómicas más importantes del presente, contribuyendo al estudio de la dinámica y evolución química de la Vía Láctea, la medición de un gran número de galaxias activas y cúmulos de galaxias, y ayudando a establecer condiciones de borde en los modelos del Universo acelerado [2].

Observando en la totalidad de las longitudes de onda de luz visible, 4MOST no sólo dará respuesta a muchas interrogantes astronómicas notables, sino que está diseñado específicamente para complementar tres observatorios espaciales todo-cielo, de interés clave Europeo  - Gaia, EUCLID, y eROSITA. Además, proporcionará un complemento espectroscópico a diversos sondeos de gran área, incluyendo el VST, Pan-STARRS, el Sondeo de Energía Oscura, LSST, ASKAP, WISE, y PLATO.

[2] 4MOST permitirá a los astrónomos estudiar la distribución espectral de la luz de aproximadamente 2400 objetos simultáneamente sobre un campo de visión de cuatro grados cuadrados - un área equivalente al 20 Lunas llenas. 4MOST pasará la mayor parte de su tiempo realizando sondeos espectroscópicos del cielo austral, recolectando 25 millones de espectros cada cinco años de un área de más de 17 000 grados cuadrados - más del 40% de todo el cielo. Durante su vida útil planificada de quince años, se espera que entregue a la comunidad astronómica una cifra sin precedentes de 75 millones de espectros.

Información adicional

En 2010, ESO pidió sugerencias a su comunidad astronómica para el diseño de un espectrógrafo de campo amplio. Se seleccionaron dos conceptos para proceder a las fases de diseño y construcción: 4MOST y MOONS (Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph) cuya primera luz se ha programado para el 2018.
