ESO firma contrato para el pulido del espejo secundario del E-ELT
La empresa francesa Reosc pulirá el espejo secundario de mayor tamaño jamás construido

ESO acaba de firmar un contrato con la compañía francesa Reosc [1], una filial de Safran Electronics & Defense, para pulir el espejo secundario del futuro European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) de ESO a partir de una pieza en blanco preformada de vidrio cerámico. Reosc diseñará el espejo y su sistema de montaje, pulirá la superficie, y llevará a cabo todas las pruebas ópticas necesarias antes de la entrega final, la que se espera para el año 2022.
El contrato fue firmado por el Director General de ESO, Tim de Zeeuw y M. Thierry Batut, Presidente de Reosc, en presencia de M. Jean-Claude Brunet, el Cónsul General de Francia en Múnich, otros altos representantes de Reosc y miembros importantes del personal de ESO.
El espejo secundario es, como su nombre lo indica, el segundo de cinco espejos que guiarán la luz emitida por objetos distantes a través del telescopio, para finalmente converger en el foco Nasmyth del mismo, en donde se encontrarán un conjunto de instrumentos científicos. Colgando, de manera invertida, en la parte superior de la estructura del telescopio, por encima del espejo primario de 39 metros, este será el espejo secundario de mayor tamaño alguna vez empleado en un telescopio y el mayor espejo convexo nunca antes producido. Con más de 4 metros de diámetro, posee la misma magnitud que los espejos primarios de muchos telescopios profesionales de primera clase. La forma y el pulido del espejo se llevarán a cabo con una precisión de 15 nanómetros (15 millonésimas de milímetro) aplicada sobre la superficie óptica [2]. Debido a que este es un espejo asférico altamente convexo, su fabricación representa un desafío considerable y el resultado será un ejemplo verdaderamente notable de ingeniería óptica de precisión (al igual que con muchos elementos del E-ELT, este será una real innovación en esta área de la tecnología).

La compañía también construyó los espejos de una sola pieza para el Very Large Telescope de ESO, cada uno de 8 metros, así como el telescopio internacional Gemini, el espejo de 11 metros para el Gran Telescopio de Canarias, espejos para el instrumento europeo Nirspec instalado en el telescopio espacial James Webb de la NASA, y los espejos para la sonda espacial GAIA de la ESA.
[2] Si el espejo tuviese 700 km de diámetro (la distancia entre la Sede de ESO en Garching, Alemania, y la planta de Reosc en Saint-Pierre-du-Perray, en Francia) la precisión correspondería a sólo 3 mm.
