Nuevo enlace de fibra óptica para transmisión de datos a alta velocidad instalado en ALMA

El Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) aumentó en 25 veces su capacidad para transmitir datos de manera remota. Una nueva conexión que comprende 150 kilómetros de cables de fibra óptica se instaló de forma exitosa entre el observatorio (ubicado a 34 kilómetros de San Pedro de Atacama) y la ciudad de Calama, en el norte de Chile. Desde Calama, el sistema se conecta con la Corporación Red Universitaria Nacional (REUNA), la que ya se encuentra establecida en Antofagasta, y desde este punto hasta las oficinas de ALMA en Santiago, a través de una infraestructura ya existente (el proyecto  EVALSO).

Este hito implica que en el futuro se podrá entregar una enorme cantidad de datos, a una velocidad asombrosa, a la comunidad científica de ALMA en todo el mundo.

Este importante logro en la labor científica de ALMA es el resultado de un contrato entre AUI, la institución que representa a los socios norteamericanos de ALMA, y las empresas Sílica Networks Chile S.A. y Telefónica Empresas Chile S.A.. Si bien el trabajo científico se verá beneficiado, se espera que el sistema también facilite la conectividad por fibra óptica hacia una zona del país que hasta el momento carecía de este tipo de instalación, y que incluso podría ampliarse hasta Argentina en el futuro.

“Esta nueva infraestructura no sólo permite la transmisión de la enorme cantidad de datos generados por ALMA, sino que también mejora el nivel de comunicación entre las personas que operan el observatorio desde una ubicación remota en el medio del desierto de Atacama y aquellos que procesan la información en el oficinas centrales en Santiago y en todo el mundo", dijo Giorgio Filippi parte de ESO y líder del proyecto.

El logro tecnológico culminó con las pruebas de transmisión de datos entre el llano de Chajnantor, situado a una altitud de 5.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, donde se ubican las 66 antenas de ALMA, y las oficinas en Santiago. Aunque no se utilizó la capacidad total de la red instalada (dos canales con una capacidad superior a 1 Gbps — gigabit por segundo — se emplearon en la prueba), se estableció de manera exitosa una videoconferencia entre ambos puntos geográficos, y las oficinas de REUNA en Santiago, simultáneamente, lo que demostró que el sistema funciona.
