Personal de ESO comparte el premio Breakthrough 2015

Varios miembros del personal de ESO forman parte de equipos que han sido galardonados con el Premio Breakthrough 2015 en Física Fundamental, por su descubrimiento de la expansión acelerada del Universo.
El 9 de noviembre de 2014 se otorgó el Premio Breakthrough 2015 [1] en Física Fundamental al Supernova Cosmology Project (Proyecto Cosmología Supernova) y al High-z Supernova Project (Proyecto Supernova High-z). El premio se otorgó por “el inesperado descubrimiento que logró demostrar que la expansión del Universo se está acelerando, en lugar de desacelerarse, contrariamente a lo que se supuso durante mucho tiempo”. Este descubrimiento ha marcado el momento culminante de la cosmología del siglo veinte y ha trazado el camino para la actual era de investigaciones.
El premio consiste en un monto de tres millones de dólares que se compartirán entre los miembros de los equipos. Los ganadores del Premio Nobel, Saul Perlmutter perteneciente a la Universidad Berkeley California y al Laboratorio Nacional Lawrence Berkeley, Brian P. Schmidt de la Universidad Nacional de Australia y Adam Riess miembro de la Universidad Johns Hopkins y del Space Telescope Science Institute recibieron la distinción en nombre de ambos grupos.
Los equipos se componen de 51 miembros [2] incluyendo a Bruno Leibundgut, Jason Spyromilio — ambos de ESO — como también dos ex miembros del personal ESO Isobel Hook y Chris Lidman. Los telescopios de ESO New Technology Telescope y el Telescopio 3.6-metros del Observatorio La Silla desempeñaron un rol fundamental en este trabajo.
La ceremonia de premiación contó con la participación de Seth MacFarlane como anfitrión, y con la presencia de destacadas personalidades como Kate Beckinsale, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cameron Diaz, Jon Hamm y Eddie Redmayne quienes actuaron como presentadores. La ceremonia será televisada a nivel mundial el 22 de noviembre de 2014 por el canal BBC World News.
