Aviso a los Medios: Conferencia de Prensa para Anunciar Planes para un Nuevo Planetario y Centro de Exposiciones en Bavaria

El 3 de diciembre, 2013, a las 11:00 CET, se realizará una conferencia de prensa en ESO, Garching bei Munchen, Alemania, para anunciar los planes para la construcción de un centro de exposiciones y planetario en la Sede de ESO en Bavaria.

El nuevo edificio tiene como finalidad la difusión de la astronomía a nivel popular y será financiado mediante una donación del  Klaus Tschira Stiftung, fundación alemana que apoya las ciencias naturales, matemáticas y  ciencias de la computación. El nuevo centro, que será apoyado financieramente con fondos operacionales de ESO, está diseñado  para inspirar a las personas a mirar las estrellas y a enseñar al público sobre la importancia de la astronomía y su  impacto  en nuestra vida cotidiana.

El proyecto está basado en una idea que surgió de una cooperación entre ESO y el Instituto Heidelberg de Estudios Teóricos  – el instituto de investigación del Klaus Tschira Stiftung. Se espera comenzar los trabajos de construcción en 2014.

El interés del público en la astronomía y las ciencias espaciales ha tenido un importante resurgimiento recientemente.  Con la inauguración del Observatorio ALMA en Chile y el constante flujo de nuevos descubrimientos que han surgido de otros sitios de ESO, como La Silla y Paranal, ESO se encuentra en una posición privilegiada para brindar educación y difusión en astronomía a una cantidad creciente de público interesado en el tema.

El nuevo edificio simboliza un sistema binario de estrellas a punto de convertirse en una supernova.  El impactante diseño de este grácil edificio fue concebido por Klaus Tschira, con la asistencia de la empresa de arquitectura Bernhardt + Partner, ubicada en Darmstadt.  Dicha empresa diseñó previamente la espectacular Casa de la Astronomía en Heidelberg.  El nuevo centro de visitas de ESO funcionará  como una dependencia hermana de la Casa de la Astronomía, que fuera fundada por la  Klaus Tschira Stiftung y la Sociedad  Max Planck. 

El nuevo centro contará con una sala de exposiciones y un planetario de bóveda completa, de tamaño mediano, de última generación, con presentaciones hechas a la medida por ESO y otras organizaciones de vanguardia.  Otras salas adicionales incluyen salas de conferencias que permitirán ofrecer una variedad de disertaciones, talleres y conferencias para el público y eventos académicos.
