ESO hace un viaje de ida y vuelta a la Luna en el año de su 50 aniversario

El 21 de abril de 2012, el radioaficionado Jan Van Muijiwiljk apuntó desde los Países Bajos el Radiotelescopio Dwingeloo hacia la Luna. Ondas de radio que transportaban una versión digital del logo del 50 aniversario de ESO se enviaron hacia el espacio exterior desde la estación de radioaficionados de Howard Ling, en Inglaterra. Una vez las señales rebotaron sobre el satélite natural de la Tierra, estas fueron captada por Jan menos de tres segundos más tarde, tras un recorrido de alrededor de 800.000 km. El resultado puede verse en esta imagen que, literalmente, hizo un viaje de ida y vuelta a la Luna.
Patrick Barthelow, que trabaja en el proyecto Ecos del Apolo y es un entusiasta promotor en la divulgación del programa Moonbounce [1] y de las actividades educativas del programa STEM [2], fue quien inició este proyecto para celebrar el 50 aniversario de ESO. La artista Daniela de Paulis fue la primera en proponer la idea de enviar imágenes y hacer que “rebotaran” en la Luna (Moonbounce en inglés), y continúa aplicando su experiencia profesional en esa línea.
Les invitamos a unirse a las celebraciones de nuestro aniversario, ya sea tomando parte en actividades como la exposición que celebra el aniversario, “Universo Asombroso (AwESOme Universe)”, o iniciando las suyas propias, tal y como hizo Patrick. [1] Moonbounce o Tierra-Luna-Tierra (en inglés EME, Earth-Moon-Earth) es una técnica de comunicaciones por radio basada en la propagación de ondas de radio desde un transmisor basado en Tierra dirigido hacia la Luna, con el fin de que las ondas reboten sobre su superficie, regresando de nuevo hacia un receptor basado en Tierra. La tecnología utilizada para reflejar las imágenes desde la Luna se denomina EME-SSTV (Earth-Moon-Earth Slow-Scan-Television).

ASTRON ya no utiliza el telescopio Dwingeloo para observaciones astronómicas. Desde 2009, este telescopio, (construido entre 1954 y 1956) es un monumento nacional.
La estación CAMRAS (CA Muller Radio-Astronomy Station), formada por voluntarios (entre los cuales hay técnicos, radioaficionados y astrónomos aficionados) alquila el telescopio a ASTRON y ayuda a mantenerlo como un monumento en activo. Los voluntarios se hacen cargo del mantenimiento, reposición y renovación de las antenas, los receptores, el control, los mecanismos de guiado y la construcción. Los voluntarios de CAMRAS usan el telescopio para comunicaciones por radio, observaciones astronómicas, fines educativos y eventos con público general, como el día de puertas abiertas del monumento o la celebración del mes del conocimiento, en octubre.
