O Interferómetro do Very Large Telescope

O Interferómetro do Very Large Telescope (VLTI) do ESO usa uma técnica chamada interferometria para combinar a radiação colectada pelos quatro Telescópios Principais de 8,2 metros do VLT (UTs) ou os quatro Telescópios Auxiliares amovíveis de 1,8 metros (ATs), criando assim um telescópio "virtual" maior com um diâmetro equivalente à distância entre os telescópios individuais (chamada "linha de base”). Assim, o VLTI consegue obter muito mais detalhes do cosmos do que o que seria possível com os ATs ou UTs individuais.

A possibilidade de combinar luz usando quer os UTs quer os ATs torna o VLTI bastante especial. Os UTs, com os seus diâmetros maiores, têm um grande poder colector e podem formar seis linhas de base, todas com diferentes comprimentos e orientações, o que permite obter uma resolução máxima possível equivalente a um telescópio com 130 metros de diâmetro. Os ATs podem ser colocados em 30 posições diferentes ao longo da plataforma do VLT para obtermos mais informações sobre os objetos cósmicos observados. Deste modo, temos um maior número de linhas de base possíveis, o que permite ao VLTI atingir uma resolução máxima equivalente a um telescópio com 200 metros de diâmetro.

Atualmente, o VLTI opera com linhas de base que vão até aos 140 metros, dependendo da posição dos ATs. Graças a este diâmetro enorme, os astrónomos consguem observar detalhes até 17 vezes melhores do que o que seria possível com um único UT, o que corresponde a uma precisão equivalente a conseguirmos distinguir as luzes dianteiras e traseiras de um carro visto de lado e estacionado na Lua.

Os raios de luz colectados pelos telescópios individuais são encaminhados para o VLTI por meio de um complexo sistema de espelhos em túneis subterrâneos. Os raios são guiados para o complemento de instrumentos do VLTI, onde são combinados, ficando finalmente disponíveis para serem analisados cientificamente. Para combinar com sucesso a luz, a diferença de percurso entre cada telescópio não pode ser maior que uma milésima de milímetro.

Ciência com o VLTI

Graças à sua extrema precisão e nitidez extraordinária, o VLTI consegue obter imagens de uma enorme variedade de objetos com um detalhe sem precedentes, ajudando a fazer avançar muitas áreas da astronomia. Exemplos incluem a procura de planetas fora do Sistema Solar, a observação de estrelas tanto jovens como velhas, o estudo do meio que circunda imediatamente o buraco negro supermassivo situado no centro da Via Láctea, e a investigação de objetos cósmicos longe da nossa Galáxia, tais como, por exemplo, núcleos ativos de galáxias, um dos mais energéticos e misteriosos fenómenos do Universo.
