Uma noite descansada para o ELT
Crescer não é fácil! Esta Fotografia da Semana, tirada no dia 3 de Abril de 2024, mostra o Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) do ESO a gozar de um merecido descanso noturno após mais um dia de construção. A vista do interior da cúpula do telescópio mostra o progresso desta estrutura gigante, com 80 metros de altura e 88 metros de largura, que protegerá o maior olho do mundo virado para o céu do ambiente extremo do deserto chileno do Atacama.
O esqueleto de metal da cúpula já está terminado, estando agora a ser aplicado um revestimento com isolamento de proteção — os painéis azuis escuros que se vêem por cima. Este revestimento é composto por diferentes camadas, incluindo uma insulação térmica e placas de alumínio no exterior. Juntamente com ar condicionado, que estará ligado durante o dia, quando a cúpula estiver fechada, estes componentes manterão o ar no interior da cúpula à mesma temperatura que o ar no seu exterior, minimizando assim a turbulência que, de outro modo, poderia desfocar as imagens capturadas pelo ELT.
No centro, numa fundação de betão separada para a proteger de vibrações que se propaguem pelo solo, encontra-se a estrutura azimutal onde será montado o telescópio e o seu complemento de instrumentos científicos.
Para já, a estrutura do ELT desfruta de uma bela vista da Via Láctea durante a sua pausa noturna. No futuro, o telescópio operará durante a noite, mas terá acesso à mesma vista quando a cúpula abrir a sua enorme fenda para observar o céu.
