Cosmos em movimento
Todo o Universo está em constante movimento, desde os átomos individuais até aos enxames massivos de galáxias. Isto é claramente visível nesta imagem, obtida no planalto do Chajnantor a 5000 metros de altitude no deserto chileno do Atacama. É neste ambiente extremamente árido e remoto que se encontra instalado o Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), a maior rede de telescópios em existência.
O objeto desfocado é um transportador especializado, que se encontra a transportar cuidadosamente uma das 66 antenas de alta precisão do ALMA para um local específico do planalto. Ao dispôr as antenas em configurações mais extensas, os astrónomos conseguem obter imagens com muito maior resolução espacial, o que significa que a imagem é mais detalhada, enquanto que configurações mais compactas dão uma melhor sensibilidade para fontes que se encontram muito estendidas no céu.
Há também movimento no céu. Nuvens suaves varrem o céu chileno sob o olhar da companheira lunar constante da Terra. Dada a sua aparência tranquila, brilhando no céu como uma lanterna, é fácil esquecermo-nos que a Lua se desloca em torno da Terra a grande velocidade. Mais longe, os pontos visíveis das estrelas e as formas difusas das galáxias podem parecer eternos, mas é claro que também eles estão em constante movimento e interação. As muitas noites límpidas que o Chajnantor nos oferece permitem ao ALMA desfrutar de um local privilegiado a partir do qual toda esta atividade cósmica pode ser observada.
