Visite os céus
Nesta fotografia, tirada pelo Embaixador Fotográfico do ESO Babak Tafreshi, uma fatia de cores fortes aparece no horizonte perto do Observatório do Paranal no norte do Chile, projetando nos quatro Telescópios Principais do Very Large Telescope (VLT) tons coloridos suaves.
A Via Láctea parece flutuar diretamente por cima de um dos telescópios, ligada de cada lado por belos conjuntos de estrelas — incluindo Sirius, que resplandece no topo da imagem. Fazendo parte da constelação do Cão Maior, Sirius é a estrela mais brilhante do céu tratando-se na realidade de um sistema binário, constituído por uma estrela de sequência principal (Sirius A, uma estrela estável na sua fase adulta, que se encontra a queimar o seu combustível nuclear, ou seja, hidrogénio) e uma anã branca (Sirius B, o resto denso de uma estrela que já gastou todo o seu combustível há muito tempo).
Descendo pela beira da Via Láctea podemos ver à esquerda um pequeno grupo de estrelas brilhantes. Trata-se do Cinturão de Orion, um asterismo bem conhecido composto por três estrelas colocadas em linha recta. A estrela gigante vermelha Betelgeuse situa-se à direita do cinturão, podendo o brilho rosado da Nebulosa de Orion ser visto à esquerda. Estes objetos fazem parte da constelação de Orion, o caçador da mitologia grega.
Mais para baixo, depois do Touro e logo por cima de uma pequena cúpula aberta que espreita os céus noturnos (um Telescópio Auxiliar do VLT), vemos um grupo compacto de estrelas por cima do horizonte brilhante. São as chamadas Pleiades, ou Sete Irmãs, um enxame estelar aberto dominado por estrelas azuis quentes de tipo espectral B — e um dos enxames mais próximos da Terra.
