Os ovos da Águia
Messier 16 (M 16), também conhecida como Nebulosa da Águia, situa-se na constelação austral da Serpente.
Com o auxílio do instrumento infravermelho multi-modo ISAAC, montado no telescópio Antu de 8,2 metros do Very Large Telescope do ESO, astrónomos europeus obtiveram esta imagem da Nebulosa da Águia no infravermelho próximo. As imagens ISAAC cobrem uma região de 9 por 9 minutos de arco, em três cores de banda larga, com uma sensibilidade suficiente para detectar estrelas jovens de todas as massas e, mais importante ainda, com uma nitidez de imagem tão boa como 0,35 segundos de arco.
A imagem de campo largo da M 16 mostra que muito se passa nesta região. Em primeira análise salta-nos imediatamente à vista um enorme número de estrelas. As que aparecem azuis na imagem infravermelha são, ou membros do enxame jovem NGC 6611 - cujas estrelas de grande massa se concentram em cima à direita (a noroeste) - ou estrelas em primeiro plano que por acaso se situam na direcção da nossa linha de visão, relativamente à M 16.
A maioria das estrelas são ténues e mais amareladas. São estrelas normais que se encontram por detrás da M 16, ao longo da linha de visão que passa pelo bojo galáctico e são observadas através das nuvens moleculares a partir das quais se formou o enxame NGC 6611. Podemos ver também algumas estrelas muito vermelhas. Estas estrelas ou são muito jovens e ainda se encontram envoltas nas nuvens de gás e poeira, ou são estrelas de fundo mais brilhantes, que brilham através das nuvens.
A fotografia é o resultado de um mosaico composto a três cores da Nebulosa da Águia (Messier 16), baseada em 144 imagens individuais obtidas com o instrumento ISAAC, montado no VLT, no Observatório do Paranal. No centro, podemos ver os chamados “Pilares da Criação”. Esta imagem infravermelha de campo largo mostra não apenas os três pilares centrais mas também vários outros na mesma região de formação estelar, assim como um enorme número de estrelas em frente, no interior ou por trás da Nebulosa da Águia. O enxame de estrelas azuis brilhantes que se observa em cima e à direita é o NGC 6611, local onde se encontram as estrelas quentes de grande massa que iluminam os pilares.
