O ESO torna-se parceiro da maior rede de astronomia terrestre europeia

O Observatório Europeu do Sul (ESO) tornou-se membro de um novo projeto, lançado a semana passada: o Opticon-RadioNet Pilot (ORP), a maior rede de astronomia terrestre europeia. Esta rede junta 37 instituições, incluindo o ESO, da Europa, Austrália e África do Sul.
Na ORP, o ESO irá fomentar a transferência de conhecimento ao organizar uma vasta gama de programas de formação para a comunidade astronómica europeia, que incluirão escolas de observação em observatórios europeus, assim como workshops de arquivo, instrumentação e redação de propostas de observação. A longo prazo, o ESO ajudará também a ORP a desenvolver estratégias que promovam políticas e ações de igualdade de oportunidades no seio da comunidade astronómica.
Dispondo de um fundo de 15 milhões de euros do programa de investigação e inovação da União Europeia, Horizon 2020, a ORP liga duas redes de astronomia já existentes (Opticon e RadioNet), de modo a juntar vários telescópios e redes de todo o mundo, com o objetivo de proporcionar aos astrónomos europeus acesso a uma vasta gama de instrumentos, assim como formação para investigadores no início das suas carreiras. A parte dos fundos europeus que corresponde ao ESO irá ser aplicada em infraestruturas de apoio do Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) e do Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), permitindo assim aos astrónomos aceder a serviços de apoio ao utilizador a partir da Rede de Centros Regionais do ALMA. Este fundo será também usado para desenvolver novas ferramentas de investigação e análise para os interferómetros do ESO e para preparar um programa de formação destinado a astrónomos no início das suas carreiras.
“Através da ORP duas comunidades astronómicas que observam a diferentes comprimentos de onda irão juntar-se num enorme esforço de colaboração, o que facilitará o nascimento de novas ideias e colaborações que eventualmente resultarão numa utilização mais produtiva e eficiente das infraestruturas do ESO, em sinergia com toda a infraestrutura de observatórios europeus ópticos e rádio,” disse Leonardo Testi, astrónomo do ESO e Gestor de Operações Europeias do ALMA, que é o ponto de contacto principal do ESO na iniciativa ORP.
O projeto ORP é coordenado pelo Centro Nacional de Investigação Científica francês (CNRS), que gere a rede em conjunto com a Universidade de Cambridge, Reino Unido, e o Instituto Max-Planck de Rádio Astronomia, Alemanha.
