Prémio Olivier Chesneau 2019 atribuído a Jozua de Boer

O Prémio Olivier Chesneau de 2019 foi atribuído a Jozua de Boer pela sua tese de doutoramento intitulada “High-contrast Imaging of Protoplanetary Disks“ (Imagens de alto contraste de discos protoplanetários). Jozua é atualmente investigador de pós-doutoramento no Observatório de Leiden, na Holanda, local onde completou o seu doutoramento em 2018.
Este prémio foi estabelecido pelo ESO e pelo Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur para comemorar a vida e trabalho do astrónomo Olivier Chesneau [1]. O prémio é atribuído a cada dois anos à melhor tese de doutoramento no campo da astronomia de alta resolução angular.
Jozua impressionou o painel do júri com a abrangência do seu trabalho que combinava técnicas conhecidas com instrumentos inovadores como o SPHERE (Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch), instalado no Very Large Telescope do ESO. O estudo de discos de formação de planetas apresenta grandes desafios aos astrónomos, uma vez que tais objetos são muito ténues quando comparados com as estrelas que rodeiam, no entanto Jozua ultrapassou estas dificuldades ao usar calibrações, recolha de dados e análise muito cuidadas. O resultado deste esforço fez expandir não só a nossa compreensão das condições de formação de planetas, mas também a de técnicas pioneiras que podem ser usadas para observar outros fenómenos, desde cometas e asteroides a exoplanetas e estrelas evoluídas.
A cerimónia de entrega do prémio decorrerá durante a semana anual da Sociedade Francesa de Astronomia e Astrofísica (SF2A) que terá lugar em Nice (França) em Maio de 2019, altura em que Jozua irá receber um prémio monetário de 1000 €. Jozua terá ainda a oportunidade de apresentar o seu trabalho na Sede do ESO em Garching, na Alemanha.

[1] Olivier Chesneau (1972–2014) era um cientista muito talentoso e apaixonado pela sua área de trabalho. Chesneau realizou trabalho pioneiro em interferometria de linha de base longa no visível e infravermelho com o intuito de estudar estrelas massivas, nebulosas planetárias e novas. Os seus resultados principais incluem o estudo dos meios que circundam Eta Carinae e outras estrelas massivas, a primeira deteção de discos em nebulosas planetárias, a descoberta de evidências de ejeções bipolares de poeira por novas pouco depois das erupções e a descoberta da maior estrela hipergigante amarela na Via Láctea. As suas descobertas foram frequentemente anunciadas em notas de imprensa do ESO e do CNRS-INSU. Foi-lhe ainda atribuído o Prémio Michelson de 2012 da União Astronómica Internacional e do Instituto Mount Wilson por contribuições à astrofísica estelar feitas com o auxílio de interferometria de linha de base longa.
