Início do planeamento dos instrumentos MOS e HIRES para o E-ELT

O maior telescópio do mundo terá a melhor instrumentação

Cientistas e engenheiros começaram a estudar as especificações detalhadas de dois instrumentos que farão parte do complemento de instrumentos do futuro European Extremely  Large Telescope do ESO (E-ELT). O MOS (acrónimo do inglês para Multi-Object Spectrograph) e o HIRES (High Resolution Spectrograph) serão potentes instrumentos de vanguarda montados no maior telescópio do mundo.

O contrato para dar início aos estudos conceptuais do MOS foi assinado a 18 de março de 2016 pelo ESO e pelo CNRS-INSU, a instituição líder do consórcio MOSAIC [1]. O instrumento combinará elevada resolução espectral e espacial e fará rastreios de grande campo no visível e no infravermelho. Permitirá aos astrónomos investigar alguns dos maiores mistérios do Universo, como por exemplo: quando é que as primeiras galáxias se formaram e como é que se agregaram em grandes estruturas como a Via Láctea; como é que a matéria normal e a matéria escura estão distribuídas no Universo; e como é que os planetas em torno de outras estrelas se formam e evoluem?

O contrato para dar início aos estudos conceptuais do HIRES foi assinado a 22 de março de 2016 pelo ESO e pelo consórcio HIRES, liderado pelo INAF [2]. O HIRES será um espectrógrafo de alta resolução, que opera simultaneamente no visível e no infravermelho, e que será utilizado para estudos extremamente detalhados e precisos de objetos individuais. Permitirá aos astrónomos, por exemplo: estudar as atmosferas de planetas em órbita de outras estrelas em busca de sinais de vida; investigar a evolução das galáxias; identificar a assinatura das primeiras gerações de estrelas no Universo primordial; e determinar se algumas das constantes fundamentais da física, as quais regulam a maioria dos processos físicos no Universo, variam de facto com o tempo.

Os dois consórcios encontram-se entre os maiores que colaboram no fabrico de instrumentos astronómicos, ilustrando assim os esforços multinacionais envolvidos na construção destes espectrógrafos.

Os instrumentos deste tipo fazem parte das ferramentas indispensáveis a qualquer telescópio moderno — estes exemplos líderes mundiais tirarão o melhor partido do enorme poder colector do espelho primário de 39 metros do E-ELT, o que lhes dará um desempenho sem igual.
