O ESO assina acordo para licença de transferência de tecnologia de sistema de arrefecimento

O ESO assinou um acordo para licenciar a sua tecnologia de sistema de arrefecimento à empresa espanhola FRACTAL SLNE. Este acordo vem no seguimento de anteriores acordos de transferência de tecnologia relativos ao licenciamento de tecnologia laser de ponta, assinados pelo ESO em 2010 [1]. Tais licenças são grandes oportunidades, tanto para a indústria como para o ESO.
Os sistemas de arrefecimento de fluxo contínuo foram inicialmente desenvolvidos pelo ESO para arrefecer os instrumentos e detectores do Very Large Telescope (VLT). Esta tecnologia tem sido usada extensivamente durante a última década.
Os sistemas de fluxo contínuo são mais compactos que os sistemas tradicionais que usam um banho de líquido muito frio, mas partilham a vantagem de não sofrerem de vibrações [2]. Estes sistemas permitem que a temperatura no interior de um instrumento passe da temperatura ambiente a —193º C, não sendo afectados por perdas de energia eléctrica. Como resultado, o instrumento pode ser mantido muito próximo da sua temperatura de funcionamento e o vácuo no seu interior é retido.
Este acordo inclui o licenciamento de crióstatos funcionais (os quais regulam as temperaturas baixas) usados para arrefecer detectores individuais da temperatura ambiente até —193 º C e a versão mais sofisticada usada para arrefecer os detectores ultra-estáveis [3], que são utilizados em medições muito sensíveis.
A transferência de tecnologia encoraja o uso alargado do saber do ESO. As empresas beneficiam do acesso regulado e do licenciamento de novas tecnologias aumentando a sua competitividade industrial e a gama de produtos. O ESO beneficia também do uso da sua tecnologia como standard industrial, garantindo a disponibilidade dos produtos a longo prazo. Este licenciamento não exclusivo significa que no futuro o ESO terá uma maior escolha de fornecedores, fortalecendo as suas relações e contactos com a indústria e, finalmente, cumprindo uma das suas missões, a transferência de tecnologia para um mercado mais alargado.

[1] Em 2010, o ESO transferiu pela primeira vez tecnologia patenteada num acordo que licenciou a sua tecnologia laser de ponta a dois parceiros comerciais, Toptica Photonics e MPB Communications.
[2] Tais sistemas de arrefecimento de fluxo contínuo sem vibrações são os melhores, e possivelmente os únicos, sistemas que poderão satisfazer as especificações de arrefecimento muito rigorosas do E-ELT.
[3] O detector ultra estável é usado para espectrógrafos de velocidade radial termicamente insulados, que são instrumentos que podem ser utilizados para medir a variação em frequência da radiação ao longo da linha de visão entre dois objetos, para determinar a sua velocidade. Tais métodos podem ser usados para detectar e determinar as propriedades de exoplanetas.
