SAURON galardoado com o Prémio “2013 Group Achievement Award” da Real Sociedade de Astronomia
Três membros do pessoal do ESO e um ex-investigador associado da organização encontram-se entre os membros da equipa

A Real Sociedade de Astronomia do Reino Unido (sigla do inglês, RAS) atribuiu o Prémio de Grupo “A” de 2013 à equipa do projecto SAURON, que conta entre os seus membros com Tim de Zeeuw, Harald Kuntschner e Eric Emsellem do ESO e também Davor Krajnović, um recente investigador associado do Observatório. Este prémio reconhece grupos que se tenham destacado pela contribuição dada à astronomia. O prémio foi entregue durante a Reunião Nacional de Astronomia do Reino Unido, em St. Andrews, Escócia, no passado dia 3 de julho de 2013.
O SAURON é um espectrógrafo de campo integral com um campo de visão de 33 x 44 segundos de arco, construído de acordo com requerimentos específicos no Observatório de Lyon, para o Telescópio William Herschel (WHT) de 4,2 metros, situado no Observatório do Roque de los Muchachos, em La Palma, Espanha. O objectivo científico específico da equipa que desenvolveu o projecto SAURON era compreender a evolução das galáxias elípticas, observando detalhadamente amostras de objectos próximos.
A iniciativa SAURON combina uma conceção instrumental optimizada, métodos minuciosos de análise e criação de modelos científicos para interpretar os resultados, e um elevado grau de organização ao longo de toda a colaboração. A equipa responsável pelo SAURON centrou-se em observações de uma amostra representativa de 72 galáxias precoces (galáxias elípticas, lenticulares e espirais do tipo Sa). O projecto ATLAS3D deu seguimento a este trabalho ao mesmo tempo que o expandiu, analisando uma amostra de 260 galáxias elípticas e lenticulares localizadas num volume delimitado do Universo.
Os aspectos científicos que mais se destacam no projecto SAURON incluem: a descoberta de uma correlação clara entre a relação massa-luminosidade e a dispersão de velocidades ligada ao conteúdo de matéria escura das galáxias precoces; a descoberta de que o gás quente numa fracção substancial de galáxias precoces deve ter uma origem externa; uma nova classificação cinemática para as galáxias precoces baseada num substituto do momento angular específico que indica que os objectos que rodam rapidamente e os que rodam mais lentamente são fisicamente distintos e uma demonstração clara de que as populações estelares jovens são mais frequentes em galáxias precoces de massa mais baixa e que rodam mais rapidamente.
O SAURON é um instrumento privado que faz parte do Telescópio William Herschel desde 1999 e que continua a ser utilizado por cientistas do Reino Unido, da Holanda e da Espanha. Encontra-se disponível a toda a comunidade num contexto de colaboração.
