Parceria com Asas para a Ciência

O ESO iniciou uma parceria na área da divulgação com o projeto ORA Asas para a Ciência, que oferece apoio aéreo a organizações públicas de investigação, numa viagem que está a realizar pelo mundo inteiro. O projeto obteve recentemente algumas belas imagens dos observatórios no norte do Chile, tal como o maior projeto astronómico que existe, o internacional Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).
ORA (Observar, Relatar, Analizar) é uma organização sem fins lucrativos, cujos membros são cientistas, professores ou profissionais de aeronáutica. Os dois membros da equipa do projeto Asas para a Ciência, Clémentine Bacri e Adrien Normier, voam em redor do mundo, ajudando os cientistas com as suas capacidades aéreas, em projetos tão diversos como amostragens de ar no âmbito da arqueologia, observação de biodiversidade e modelização de terreno a 3D. Os pequenos filmes e belas imagens produzidos durante os voos são utilizados para fins educativos e promoção da investigação do local. A viagem de circumnavegação da equipa começou em junho de 2012 e terminará em junho de 2013, com uma aterragem no Espectáculo Aéreo de Paris. A equipa utiliza um avião ultraleve especial amigo do ambiente [2].
Algumas das melhores imagens aéreas dos observatórios do ESO obtidas pelo Asas para a Ciência serão publicadas nas páginas internet do ESO nos próximos meses.

[1] O Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), uma infraestrutura astronómica internacional, é uma parceria entre a Europa, a América do Norte e o Leste Asiático, em cooperação com a República do Chile. O ALMA é financiado na Europa pelo Observatório Europeu do Sul (ESO), na América do Norte pela Fundação Nacional para a Ciência dos Estados Unidos (NSF) em cooperação com o Conselho Nacional de Investigação do Canadá (NRC) e no Leste Asiático pelos Institutos Nacionais de Ciências da Natureza (NINS) do Japão em cooperação com a Academia Sínica (AS) da Ilha Formosa. A construção e operação do ALMA é coordenada pelo ESO, em prol da Europa, pelo Observatório Nacional de Rádio Astronomia (NRAO), que é gerido, pela Associação de Universidades (AUI), em prol da América do Norte e pelo Observatório Astronómico Nacional do Japão (NAOJ), em prol do Leste Asiático. O Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) fornece uma liderança e direção unificadas na construção, comissionamento e operação do ALMA.
[2] O avião ultraleve utilizado é um Pipistrel Virus SW 80, galardoado com um prémio da NASA, que usa apenas 7 litros de combustível para cada 100 km - menos que a maioria dos carros.
