Reinhard Genzel recebe prémio Tycho Brahe 2012

A Sociedade Astronómica Europeia [1] anunciou que o Prémio Tycho Brahe de 2012 foi concedido ao Professor Reinhard Genzel, em reconhecimento pelas suas incomparáveis contribuições para a instrumentação europeia no infravermelho próximo e pelo seu trabalho inovador em astronomia galáctica e extragaláctica.
O astrónomo alemão Reinhard Genzel – diretor do Instituto Max Planck de Física Extraterrestre – e a sua equipa foram responsáveis pela construção do SINFONI, o espectrógrafo de infravermelho próximo de campo integral ligado ao VLT. Desde a primeira luz em 2005, que o SINFONI se tornou num instrumento chave para o estudo da estrutura e dinâmica de galáxias distantes e, em particular, da dinâmica da nossa própria Galáxia, a Via Láctea.
A equipa trabalhou durante 20 anos num estudo sem precedentes sobre o movimento das estrelas em torno do centro da Galáxia, baseado em observações obtidas com o New Technology Telescope do ESO, instalado no Observatório de La Silla, e também com o VLT, no Observatório do Paranal. A medida da órbita das estrelas próximas do centro da Via Láctea forneceu aos astrónomos a mais forte evidência até hoje de que o centro da Galáxia alberga um buraco negro de massa extremamente elevada (eso0846). O resultado deu-nos a oportunidade ideal para investigar a interação de um buraco negro de elevada massa com o seu ambiente.
Recentemente, a equipa descobriu também uma nuvem de gás a cair em direção ao buraco negro no centro da Galáxia, utilizando o VLT do ESO. Pela primeira vez, os astrónomos puderam testemunhar como uma nuvem de gás fica extremamente distorcida no início no processo de ser totalmente desfeita e devorada pelo buraco negro de elevada massa situado no centro da Galáxia (eso1151).
O Prémio Tycho Brahe é concedido anualmente em reconhecimento do desenvolvimento ou exploração dos instrumentos europeus ou principais descobertas baseadas em tais instrumentos. O prémio consiste numa soma de 6000 euros e será entregue ao Professor Reinhard Genzel durante a Semana Europeia de Astronomia e Ciência Espacial (EWASS) 2012 [2], que decorrerá em Roma, Itália, de 1 a 6 de julho de 2012.
