ESO vai até a Lua e volta durante o ano do seu quinquagésimo aniversário

Em 21 de Abril de 2012, o operador de rádio amador Jan Van Muijwiljk apontou o Radio Telescópio de Dwingeloo, na Holanda, para a Lua. As ondas de rádio transportando uma versão digital do logotipo do quinquagésimo aniversário do ESO foram então transmitidas para o espaço a partir da estação de rádio amadora de Howard Ling, na Inglaterra. Após os sinais ricochetearem no satélite natural da Terra, foram seguidamente captados por Jan, menos de três segundos depois, após uma viagem de ida e volta de aproximadamente 800000 km. O resultado pode ser visto nesta imagem, que literalmente viajou até a Lua e voltou.
Patrick Barthelow, que trabalhou com os “ecos de Apolo” e é um interessado na divulgação das atividades educacionais dos projetos Moonbounce [1] e STEM [2] foi o impulsionador deste projeto pensado para marcar o aniversário do ESO. A artista Daniela de Paulis foi a primeira a apresentar a ideia das imagens do ricochete lunar e continua a utilizar a sua experiência profissional neste sentido.

[1] Ricochete Lunar ou Terra-Lua-Terra (TLT) é uma técnica de comunicação de rádio que se baseia na propagação de ondas de rádio a partir de um transmissor na Terra direcionado através da reflexão da superfície lunar e de volta para o transmissor. A tecnologia utilizada para refletir as imagens da Lua é chamada EME-SSTV (Earth Moon Earth Slow Scan Television)

O telescópio de Dwingeloo já não é utilizado para fazer observações astronómicas pelo ASTRON. O telescópio (construído entre 1954 e 1956) é um monumento nacional desde 2009.
CAMRAS (CA Muller Radio-Astronomy Station), que consiste de voluntários (entre eles técnicos, rádio-amadores e astrónomos amadores) alugam o telescópio ao ASTRON e ajudam a mantê-lo o como um monumento funcional. Os voluntários cuidam da manutenção, substituição e renovação de antenas, receptores, controles, mecanismo de rastreio e construção. Os voluntários do CAMRAS usam o telescópio para comunicação via rádio e observações astronómicas, para fins educacionais e ocasionalmente para o público geral, como no Open Monument Day e o Mês do Conhecimento, em outubro.
