ESO continua a ser o observatório terrestre mais produtivo do mundo
Lado a lado com o telescópio espacial Hubble em estatística de publicações anuais

Os astrónomos utilizaram os dados observacionais dos telescópios e instrumentos do ESO para escrever um total de 783 artigos durante 2011, o maior número em toda a história do ESO, que continua a ser de longe o observatório terrestre mais produtivo do mundo. Nos últimos anos, o número de artigos que utilizaram observações do ESO tem sido praticamente idêntico ao número feito com observações realizadas pelo Telescópio Espacial Hubble da NASA/ESA, ambos crescendo rapidamente após uma pequena queda em 2009.
Só o VLT/VLTI forneceu dados para 551 artigos em 2011, um aumento de 8% desde 2010. O número total de artigos utilizando dados do VLT/VLTI ultrapassou os 4000. Artigos que utilizam dados obtidos a partir dos arquivos do ESO representam uma fração constante de 12% nos últimos anos, com um forte aumento em 2011.
Curiosamente, mesmo excluindo a contribuição do VLT/VLTI, que é o principal instrumento do ESO, os telescópios restantes no Paranal e La Silla geram anualmente números similares de artigos ao do telescópio mais produtivo na Terra, o W.M. Keck Observatory.
Olhando mais de perto os diferentes instrumentos do VLT, encontramos alguns padrões interessantes. Os instrumentos mais produtivos do VLT em termos de artigos continuam a ser o FORS2 e o UVES. Instrumentos mais novos como o HAWK-I e o X-shooter estão crescendo rapidamente. O instrumento mais produtivo em La Silla é o espectrógrafo caçador de planetas HARPS.
Estes números foram extraidos da Bibliografia dos Telescópios do ESO (telbib, http://telbib.eso.org), um banco de dados de publicações com júri de leitura que usam dados do ESO [1]. A Telbib associa artigos publicados a programas de observação que geram dados. Isto é mantido pelos bibliotecários do ESO. Uma descrição detalhada do banco de dados telbib pode ser encontrada em http://telbib.eso.org/help.html. Gráficos interativos de estatísticas selecionadas estão disponíveis em http://telbib.eso.org/telbibstats. Estes gráficos mostram todo o conteúdo do banco de dados telbib de publicações a partir de 1996 e podem ser utilizados para o desenvolvimento de artigos científicos utilizando dados dos intrumentos do ESO, do uso de dados dos arquivos e também a média de autores e programas do ESO por artigo.
Olhando mais amplamente, desde 1996, quase 12000 autores de aproximadamente 90 países publicaram mais de 8500 artigos científicos com dados do ESO.
