June 2016

Dear Fellow Communicators,

If you are working with secondary school students, we would like to invite you to share with them a once in a lifetime opportunity — winning a trip to the 4th ESO Astronomy Camp in the Italian Alps.

"An amazing, life changing camp! I never wanted to go home, I made so many friends and learned so much throughout the week. I know I will be keeping touch with everyone from the camp as these are life-long friends. Thank you again everyone!"  These are the words of a previous participant and feedback from all of them followed the same lines — a complete educational and fun experience.

This year, the students will explore the theme of the multiwavelength Universe through several astronomical sessions, including lectures, hands-on activities, and night-time observations with the telescopes and instruments at the Astronomical Observatory of the Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley (OAVdA).

The camp will take place from 26 December 2016 to 1 January 2017 in Italy and it is organised by ESO and its Science Outreach Network together with the science education event organiser Sterrenlab and OAVdA. Learn more about the camp here.

Towards the end of May we announced the largest contract in ground-based astronomy for the biggest eye on the sky: the dome and main structure contract for the European Extremely Large Telescope. It was a concentrated outreach effort from our side with an online press conference and a press release that had many brand new audio-visual materials. We have experimented with infographics and created a comparison between the dome of the E-ELT and other telescopes’ domes, reproduced an earlier infographic on mirror sizes of current and planned telescopes, and created several graphics that compared the E-ELT to popular landmarks in our Member States.

If you have participated in #CAP2016 this May and contributed a talk we encourage you to get in touch with the CAPjournal editor if you wish to publish your work. Check out the submission guidelines here and note that your work has first to  be evaluated before it can be accepted for publication. To stay up to date with the next conference, subscribe to the CAP Conference Mailing List. Don’t forget that if you are a print subscriber to CAPjournal, you will need to confirm your subscription by following the instructions that you will find in the announcement, as well as inside the journal (keep the envelope in which you receive CAPjournal).

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!
