April 2015

Dear Fellow Communicators,

I think you know the problem: the number of social media channels just keep proliferating, replicating, multiplying … Social media remains an area of intense growth (about 100% per year for our channels here), but still we have to nurture every one of them. To help ourselves and our audiences we have opened a new social media page, to act as a hub for our complete presence on social networks. Check it out and let us know if you spot any bugs. We will promote it to the public in a couple of days, but we would love to have your feedback first.

April is your last chance to sign up for the AstroCamera 2015 competition and win some fine awards. Don’t forget that you can also win a trip to Paranal by entering the Photo Nightscape Awards!

We’d like to give you a heads up that in June ESO will join the institutes on the Garching Research Campus in celebrating the Long Night of Science. We will open our doors to the public, who are invited to take part in the activities, from 18:00 until midnight. If you are around, don’t miss the chance to participate as this will be the only Open House event this year.

We are also happy to inform you that we will have an ESO Astronomy Camp this year. Stay tuned for details and get the students ready to sign up! We have been receiving excellent reviews every year from participants. The first student (from the 2013 camp) is now enrolled in a university (MIT), and the first couple have moved in together. Splendid results indeed (in very different ways ;))!

We are happy to introduce our newest ESO Photo Ambassador, Petr Horálek. Born in 1986 in the Czech Republic, Petr worked briefly as an observer of fireballs at the Department for Interplanetary Matter of the Astronomical Institute of Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic. During this period he fell in love with astrophotography and decided to take a year-long trip around the world to improve his skills in that field. Admire his work here.

On the Hubble front, we have the shortlist of the ten lucky participants selected in the Ode to Hubble competition by the public. We would like to thank you if you have spread the word of the competition. The winners will be announced at the end of this month. We have also selected the institutions that will receive a 3-metre wide print of the anniversary image to be unveiled on 23 April. You can check the list here to see if any of them are near you!

From the IAU, we are pleased to announce a competition organised in partnership with NASA’s New Horizons mission and the SETI Institute. The campaign will allow the public to participate in naming newly discovered features on Pluto and its satellites. It is expected that several features will be discovered during the flyby of Pluto 14 July and some of these will be available for naming. The public is invited to suggest names within the designated IAU themes for these celestial bodies before 24 April. Read more here.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
