Kosmische vuurbal boven ALMA
Deze prachtige opname, gemaakt bij de Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), is een nieuwe Ultra High Definition-foto van de ESO Ultra HD Expedition. ALMA ligt op 5000 meter boven de zeespiegel op de afgelegen en onherbergzame Chajnantor-hoogvlakte in de Chileense Andes. Het is de tweede bestemming van de vier ESO Photo Ambassadors[1] op hun 17-daagse reis. De fotografen zijn uitgerust met state-of-the-art Ultra HD-apparatuur waarmee ze weidse uitzichten zoals deze in hun werkelijke grootsheid kunnen vastleggen [2][3].
Enkele van de 66 antennes waaruit ALMA bestaat zijn hier zichtbaar. De opwaarts gerichte schotels bestuderen de koude interstellaire wolken en turen diep in het verleden naar onze mysterieuze kosmische oorsprong.
De spectaculaire speer van veelkleurig licht boven de ALMA-array die het beeld doorsnijdt, is een vallende ster. Smaragdgroene, gouden en zwakke karmozijnrode tinten gloeien op wanneer de meteoor met hoge snelheid de aardse atmosfeer binnenkomt en verbrandt. In werkelijkheid is deze vuurbal een klein brokstuk uit de interplanetaire ruimte. Het brokstuk wordt extreem warm, verdampt laag voor laag en laat een paar seconden lang een gloeiend spoor achter wanneer het de atmosfeer doorkruist. Deze vurige reis langs de hemel is hier met een druk op de knop vastgelegd.
Twee heldere kosmische toeschouwers van deze vurige afdaling zijn in het midden van het beeld net boven de horizon zichtbaar. Het zijn Spica - de helderste ster in het sterrenbeeld Maagd (Virgin) - en onze naburige planeet Mars.
De Ultra HD Expedition begon in Santiago, Chili, op 25 maart 2014. Deze foto werd gemaakt op de achtste nacht van het team op het Chajnantor Plateau. Momenteel zijn ze op La Silla, de eerste astronomische faciliteit van ESO in Chili, en morgen, na een laatste nacht, zullen ze uiteindelijk de lange reis huiswaarts maken. De Ultra HD content van deze expeditie is binnenkort gratis online beschikbaar. ESO levert scherpe, adembenemende Ultra HD-beelden en brengt het heelal dichterbij dan ooit.
