Een nieuwe coole gast in onze achtertuin
Deze nieuwe afbeelding van ESO's VISTA-telescoop laat een nieuw ontdekte bruine dwerg zien met de naam VVV BD001. Je vindt hem door in te zoomen op het centrum van de foto. Het is de eerste nieuw ontdekte bruine dwerg binnen onze kosmische omgeving als onderdeel van het VVV-onderzoek. VVV Acerca BD001 ligt 55 lichtjaar bij ons vandaan, in de richting van het zeer volle centrum van ons melkwegstelsel.
Bruine dwergen zijn sterren die er nooit helemaal in zijn geslaagd om uit te groeien tot een ster zoals onze zon, en worden vaak aangeduid als 'mislukte sterren'. Ze zijn groter in omvang dan planeten zoals Jupiter, maar kleiner dan sterren.
Deze dwerg is bijzonder in twee opzichten. Het is de eerste die gevonden is in de richting van ons melkwegcentrum - één van de meest drukke gebieden aan de hemel - en hij hoort tot een ongebruikelijke klasse van sterren die bekend staat als 'ongewoon blauwe bruine dwergen'. Het is nog onduidelijk waarom deze sterren blauwer zijn dan verwacht.
Bruine dwergen ontstaan op dezelfde manier als sterren maar hebben niet genoeg massa om de verbranding van waterstof op gang te brengen. Daardoor zijn ze veel koeler en produceren ze veel minder licht, waardoor ze moeilijk te vinden zijn. Astronomen gebruiken voor het zoeken naar deze objecten gewoonlijk nabij- en mid-infraroodcamera's en speciale telescopen die gevoelig zijn voor deze zeer koele objecten, maar vermijden meestal het zoeken in zeer volle gebieden van de ruimte, zoals bijvoorbeeld de centrale regio van ons melkwegstelsel.
VISTA (the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) is 's werelds grootste onderzoekstelescoop en ligt op ESO's Paranal in Chili. VISTA doet zes afzonderlijke onderzoeken en het VVV-onderzoek (VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea) is bedoeld om een miljard objecten in het centrum van ons eigen melkwegstelsel te catalogiseren. VVV BD001 werd bij toeval ontdekt tijdens dit onderzoek.
Wetenschappers gebruiken de VVV-catalogus om een 3-dimensionale kaart te maken van de centrale 'bol' van sterren in het centrum van de Melkweg (eso1339). Daarnaast zijn de gegevens ook gebruikt voor een enorme kleurenafbeelding van 108.200 x 81.500 pixels groot. Deze afbeelding bevat bijna negen miljard pixels (eso1242) en is één van de grootste astronomische beelden die ooit zijn geproduceerd.
