Nieuw LEGO®-model van ESO’s Very Large Telescope
Stem voor LEGO®-bouwpakketten van ESO’s E-ELT en VLT!

In 2014 ontwierp de Nederlandse astronoom Frans Snik een model van ESO’s European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) op basis van LEGO®-onderdelen. Vanwege het succes van dat ontwerp (sinds de publicatie ervan hebben enthousiaste lego’ers van over de hele wereld meer dan tien van de modellen gebouwd) heeft Snik in zijn vrije tijd nu ook een LEGO®-model ontworpen van een van de ‘Unit Telescopes’ waaruit ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) bestaat.
Al bijna twintig jaar doet de VLT astronomen versteld staan van zijn buitengewone capaciteiten. De VLT, een van de grootste telescoopfaciliteiten ter wereld, bestaat uit vier afzonderlijke telescopen die hun krachten kunnen bundelen. Momenteel werkt ESO aan de bouw van zijn grote broer, de E-ELT, die nog dieper het heelal in zal kunnen kijken. Je kunt weliswaar niet je eigen levensgrote versie van deze telescopen bouwen, maar een model is een aantrekkelijk, en vooral veel praktischer, alternatief. Het is een prachtig middel om de complexiteit van moderne astronomische instrumenten te leren begrijpen.
Net als bij zijn model van de E-ELT heeft Snik bij de bouw van zijn nieuwe model van de VLT gebruikt gemaakt van de ontwerp-applicaties ldraw en Bricksmith. Voor de VLT zijn precies 3104 onderdelen nodig, die – met wat zorg en aandacht – allemaal via bricklink bij diverse LEGO®-leveranciers kunnen worden besteld. De schaal van het model is ongeveer 1:150, net als bij het E-ELT-model, en de onderdelen kosten – afhankelijk van de instrumenten die je toevoegt – bij elkaar ongeveer 500 tot 550 euro. Het model omvat de telescoop en de complete behuizing, en ook alle instrumenten die bij de echte VLT worden gebruikt kunnen worden nagebouwd. Het geheel is draaibaar en alle luiken en ventilatieopeningen kunnen open en dicht.
Aan de hand van Sniks bouwschema’s kun je je eigen versie van de twee befaamde telescopen maken. Bovendien kun je via de LEGO® Ideas-website je stem uitbrengen op deze modellen, zodat ze straks als complete LEGO®-bouwpakketten verkrijgbaar zijn. Welke enthousiaste LEGO®-bouwer met een belangstelling voor de astronomie wil nu niet voor deze modellen stemmen? Zodra een ontwerp 10.000 stemmen heeft gekregen, maakt het kans om als bouwpakket te worden uitgebracht.
Iedereen die zijn eigen versie van een van deze enorme telescopen (of van allebei!) wil bouwen, kan nu al de gedetailleerde bouwinstructies downloaden (voor de VLT en voor de E-ELT), evenals een lijst van alle benodigde steentjes (voor de VLT en voor de E-ELT). Voor het nabouwen van een van de grootste telescopen ter wereld moet zelfs een ervaren bouwer wel wat tijd uittrekken, want het bestellen van de onderdelen en het in elkaar passen van de modellen kost je zeker een paar dagen. Maar het eindresultaat is zeker de moeite waard!
Het eerste VLT-model dat Snik heeft gebouwd, is geschonken aan ESO’s directeur-generaal Tim de Zeeuw, en staat nu naast het eerdere model van de E-ELT in diens kantoor. De LEGO®-modellen van de VLT en de E-ELT zullen vanaf 2017 te zien zijn in het toekomstige ESO Supernova Planetarium & Bezoekerscentrum in het ESO-hoofdkwartier te Garching, Duitsland.
