La bella addormentata si risveglia a La Silla
L’Osservatorio ESO di La Silla si trova alla periferia del deserto cileno di Atacama, a 600 km a nord di Santiago del Cile e a 2400 metri di altitudine. Come primo osservatorio dell'ESO, ha avuto modo di osservare meraviglie nel cielo notturno fin dall'inizio delle sue attività a partire dagli anni '60, tuttavia non mancano le occasioni per vedere cose straordinarie persino a due passi dal suo ingresso.
Il deserto di Atacama è considerato il luogo più arido della Terra, al di fuori delle regioni polari, in termini di quantità media di precipitazioni. Quando la pioggia cade, coadiuvata dalla giusta temperatura e dalla luce del sole, può però innescare qualcosa di spettacolare: iniziano a fiorire oltre 200 specie di piante diverse, i cui semi e bulbi giacciono dormienti nel terreno durante i periodi di siccità. Nel giro di poco tempo, centinaia di chilometri di deserto sabbioso, roccioso e sterile saranno ricoperte di fiori viola, rosa e gialli: un fenomeno chiamato “desierto florido” (il deserto fiorito).
Il fenomeno si verifica solo ogni pochi anni, di solito tra settembre e novembre (periodo di primavera in Cile) quando le condizioni meteorologiche sono ottimali. La foto qui sopra mostra la “superfioritura” dell'ottobre 2022, in cui si è verificata la prima fioritura in cinque anni. Questo evento ha ispirato il governo cileno a creare un parco nazionale nella provincia di Copiapó, più a nord del Cile, per proteggere questo straordinario spettacolo della natura – e il cielo notturno che lo sovrasta.
