Individuare l’ammasso
Quest’immagine, ottenuta con lo strumentoWide-Field Imager sul telescopio MPG/ESO di 2,2 metri, mostra il cielo stellato attorno all’ammasso di galassie chiamato PLCKESZ G286.6-31.3. All’inizio l’ammasso stesso è difficile da individuare, ma esso si distingue come un discreto raggruppamento di galassie giallastre al centro dell’immagine.
PLCKESZ G286.6-31.3 ospita fino a 1000 galassie, oltre ad una grande quantità di gas bollente e di materia oscura. Come tale, l’ammasso ha una massa totale di 530 bilioni (530 000 000 000 000) di volte la massa del Sole.
Visto dalla Terra, PLCKESZ G286.6-31.3 si trova ai margini della Grande Nube di Magellano (in inglese “Large Magellanic Cloud”, LMC) - una delle galassie satelliti della Via Lattea. LMC ospita più di 700 ammassi stellari, oltre a centinaia di migliaia di stelle giganti e super-giganti. La maggior parte degli oggetti cosmici ripresi in quest’immagine sono stelle e ammassi di stelle che si trovano all’interno del LMC.
Il telescopio MPG/ESO di 2,2 metri è in funzione all’osservatorio La Silla di ESO La Silla Observatory dal 1984. Questo telescopio è stato usato per una serie di studi scientifici di primo piano, come la ricerca rivoluzionaria sui lampi gamma, le esplosioni più potenti dell’universo. Il Wide Field Imager (WFI) con i suoi 67 milioni pixel - montato al fuoco Cassegrain del telescopio - ha ripreso dettagliate immagini di oggetti molto deboli e distanti dal 1999. I dati usati per creare quest’immagine sono stati selezionati dall’archivio di ESO nel contesto della competizione Hidden Treasures.
